hey fellas, anyone thinking of quitting sky? feels like i'm paying $60 bucks a month for nothing! (i get sky+sports)
no rugby world cup, and apart from formula 1 we only watch tv2, tv3, and prime!
or maybe it's just me reaching a different phase in life :) called growing up and out of tv addiction!

You sound like a candidate for freeview, as long as you can get prime on UHF.

Me too... after the contract period ends, I'm getting rid of the sky box.  I reckon the pricing for their service is far too expensive (even if I may be in a high income bracket).

Gonna get a freeview box...

Sky is a total rip off in my honest opinion, I investigated their prices when I got my new Samsung 40" LCD TV & thought there is no way I am going to commit myself to paying that much money every month, so I choose Freeview.

Just bear in mind with Freeview, that currently "there are no plans to broadcast in HDTV over Satellite, only UHF will be used at this stage".

I'm quite the opposite.

I rarely watch TV1,2 and 3.

After the cricket, league, rugby and being an Aussie - AFL, Discovery, Doco and the news channels, there doesn;t leave much time for shows like Country Calendar.

Now if they could just add Sci-Fi and Comedy Channel, that would be great!

I just binned the sports channel package a few days ago but I don't think I'd leave sky altogether. When there's crap on all the free channels, sky1 usually has something or perhaps even Discovery if the mrs isn't around (man vs wild ftw!!!). Alternatively the mrs sits on E! when I'm not about....

That said the new tvnz channels may be interesting.

I suspects SKY's HDTV will be restricted to the Rugby Channel (and whatever other niche overpriced channels there are) for the first 1-2 years. By which time freeview (or at least TV3) will probably start broadcasting in HD

Apparently, this is a niche channel which they don't really see a market in (as opposed to the Indian Channel, Arts Channel, etc.).

If everyone just ditched Sky, they would no longer have lots of money to outbid the FTA broadcasters, so live sports etc. would return to TV1/TV3.
OK, that's my rant over with Tongue out

We're getting rid of sky soon. Hiking the prices after adding MTV and some other rubbish channel? Who wants to watch MTV? It's total crap. The only things that will be missed is the doco channels and some of the sport.

I have TCL cable which is in essence Sky apart from TCL providing Discovery Travel and Living.  I don't have the sports package. I would ditch TCL cable in a heartbeat if I could find another way to get World TV since with Freeview most OTA reception problems are gone and I hardly ever watch Prime anyway.

Still it's good that the RWC is on TV3 in widescreen else I would not have been watching it all live

Well, as soon as my wife realises what her sports cost each month - it will be out of the door. I have given up watching anything on Sky - the thought of paying to watch commercials and full color station logo's that occupy up to 10% of the screen area has just worn me down. I ditched the movies a couple of months ago and just do not miss them.  So its on a short string here also.

Cheers Mike

We got rid of sky 3 months back, Waste of money and horrible picture (Horribly data compressed video so watching a game (Sport) was just ARGH! as the grass and detail could not be rendered) the audio was the same, not enough bandwidth in the codec.

Best part is I manged to "obtain" another decoder from the inorganic rubbish chuckouts....
Nice little NDS card, Nice litle GOLDCARD READER! muwahahaha.

Personally i love sky, and i especially love the repeats, i wish tvnz did more repeats that way if you miss a show you get many more chances to watch it ... i like to watch it if i happen to be around rather than making sure i'm home at a particular time.

I've tried with the whole home theatre / tv tuner recording shows but even with the higher end tv cards i could never get a good picture , it always ended up flat and washed out, i gave up after 6 months of trying diff hardware and software.

But yea, i think sky is worth it. I'm not into sports so get the basic + movies and probably only watch a movie twice a week, but i really have sky for all the other channels.

The only thing that annoys me is that I can't get the new TV6 which is bollocks, because i'm paying for it indirectly anyway, it's so called 'freeview' so why can't i get it? i need another decoder? that's bollocks.

Also as far as high def goes here is a recent article about TVNZ staring HD next year, also maybe TV3
