QUESTION: is an a dvd player with HDMI output a HD DVD player. I brought the add on player for the xbox 360 and got king kong with the player. My player works great. I then decided to take HD DVD of KING KONG disc round to my in laws and tried to play on his DVD player with HDMI output and it wouldn't play. So what is the use of a dvd player having HDMI output if it cant play HD DVD discs. Any input to this question would be great.
Cheers
Malcolm

Wikipedia Article

HDMI supports any TV or PC video format, including standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable.

Everything happening on a single cable with a small connector is very cool, even if its not HD.

psychnurse,

In all probability your in-laws DVD player is an upscaling player which will take a standard DVD and enhance it for play back to a HD TV. Generally, HD TVs will have HDMI inputs for hi definition sources (which is what it will think the upscaled DVD is).

What the DVD player will not do is play HD-DVDs which have a native resolution of at least 720p.

Assuming your in-laws have an HD TV (min horizontal resolution 768) you may want to check that the upscaling features of the DVD player are enabled. It does make quite a difference to playback.

Hope that helps

Stu

That answers the question very well. TY so much, will let him know its all about upscaling standard form DVD's and has nothing to do with HD DVD's.

Slight hi-jack here:

Does anyone know if a retailer in NZ sells the Toshiba HD-DVD players over here, HD-A2/E1 or even a lower end 1080i model???

At a fair price of course, or maybe bringing one back from Oz would be easier.......

The pricing in Ozz is not much better than here. That's why over there in Ozz they are bringing them in from the US for about US$250
