Hi

I need some assistance with SPDIF for my HTPC. I have a Gigabyte motherboard that support SPDIF out but the back panel connectors are (appear to be) speaker based i.e. all jackplug sockets rather than optical sockets. To get SPDIF out do I need to add an adapter connected to the SPDIF connectors on the motherboard and if so, where in NZ do you think would be a good place to start looking for one.

Cheers Mike

The gigabytes, unless they have SPDIF (digital coax or digital optical) on the rear panel, they normally take a daughter board that plugs into a SPDIF connector of the motherboard.

I used to have one, but let it go with my old gigabyte motherboard... I might know someone still with one...

Would depend if the pins are standard I guess...I bought an ASUS board that included the digital coax on the rear panel (M2V)

Hi, I also have a gigabyte with onboard sound card 7.1 channel which has SPDIF connections in/out.
The connection i use to use would be similar to the picture supplied by davidcole with the yellow connection which is digital coax. (no digital optical)
Use the digital coax for sound :)

I bought this from Vidabox

http://www.vidabox.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=9

for a Foxconn motherboard. They didn't ship here but I had it shipped to a friend in the US who just stuck it in a care package to me with other stuff. Docs say it will support Foxconn but I haven't tried it out yet

Thanks for the feedback guys, really appreciate it. Yep it does look like I need a panel for the backplane and there could be a couple of options for me to pursue. Psycik, I will give you a call and Regs, Ichiu7 thanks for the links.

Cheers Mike

If the pin outs are listed in the MB manual should be easy enough to see if they are compatible - Likewise had one spare...up until last week actually when I decided after 2 1/2 years of sitting on my desktop I wouldn't actually ever use it again so biffed it.

If you know the particular part # you're after try contacting BDT directly (they are in Lower Hutt) as they are the distributor of Gigabyte stuff in NZ. I do know they had some available for newer gigabyte boards but the older ones used a different pinout and are no longer available.

Failing that you could always buy a new soundcard - DSE sell one for around $40 or $50ish which has optical output. The standard driver can't handle 5.1 via optical (very stupid I know) but there is a freeware driver available that does. If you want any further details let me know as I have one here.

Well its a new motherboard so its a recent release. I will try BDT and see what they say. A seperate sound card could be an option. I will see how I get on.

PS Fraktul - never biff anything eh?  Can't remember the number of times I have dumped stuff only to need it the following week - month or year. When they cart me off this planet they will need a truck for all of the stuff gathering dust. Smile

Thanks,
Cheers Mike

You may find that one of the audio jack plugs on the back of your MB *is* the SPIDF jack. It may just require a mono 3.5 jack (as my SB live card does).

Thanks Mutly. I will check the m/b manual to see if it indicates that SPFIDF is provided on one of the outputs on the back panel. I did not see a reference to it so far.  Any idea which plug could be the target. I can see where the Line Out is identified...

Cheers Mike

Often the line out jack doubles as SPDIF/digital out as well as analogue. If you can post your MB model I can check online for info.

There is a 3.5mm headphone jack that is used in MD players and some Pace DVB boxs (the Foxtel ones come to mind). In these applications the 3.5mm jack has electical connections for headphone (or in somecases line level) intereconnect, but the tip of the jack is clear plastic to support the optical intereface. Both electrical and optical cannot be used simulatiously.

You can also get 3.5mm optical to TOSLink adaptors.

Thanks Cyril - I had not noticed those plug types before. If SPDIF is presented to the Line Out port that will be the way forward.

Mutly: The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2. Appreciate any help. I have the manual available but there is no mention that I can see of a dual purposed Line Out port.

Ah.. is internal SPIDF connector only. From the manual: "For optional S/PDIF cable, please contact your local dealer"

S/PDIF In and Out Cable (Part Number: 12CR1-1SPINO-11/R)

Hope that helps!
