Does anyone know if PLEX saves any data to the media share?

I want to test plex with my current XBMC setup, but dont want plex to create any files etc on the share where my media is stored....

I.e. is plex metadata file based? Database ? or can it be a mix?

Pretty sure metadata is stored in local app data, it is on mine anyway.

I run XBMC alongside my TV and also point a Plex server on my iMac at the same media store (NAS) so that I can stream movies from remote .. all works, nothing Plex does interferes with the main XBMC setup.

Rappelle: 140 movies and 400 TV episodes = 430MB worth of metadata, for reference.

1500 movies and 8000 tv eps = 9gb and 280,000 files worth of meta data. I really do not know how there can be so many files for each of the physical files. thats almost 30 meta data files for every physical movie/tv ep.

i ditched it for the above reason, and also you can not modify the menu structure that you see on a DLNA connected device or media player.

Has a great UI on the computer but IMHO thats all it has going for it.

How hard is it to clean up once the metadata files are there? How are they named? etc? I run XBMC with nfo files and downloaded art on the share...

When I tried a plex server on a windows machine, it seemed to treat the file system in the user profile as a database and there were over a million files and a few 100k folders made in its part of it. Really screwed up PC performance and made crashplan backup have a really bad day. I uninstalled it rather then see if there was a way to get it to keep all that junk in a proper database instead of messing up my profile folder.

clean up or remove, took about 35 mins to delete the databases using plex, which threw them into the recycle bin, then about 20mins to empty the recyclebin. that was on a SSD too.

they have some funny names, more characters etc so not easy to find what you want if you were looking.
