Woeful ignorance here - but is Singapore headed down our DVB-T path - but just a few months ahead ?

From what I can see, they are rolling out a H.264/AVC (MPEG4) DVB-T service - although they choose to use 1080i.

I don't know nearly enough to guess if our choice of 720p will preclude common DTBs - or if there are other parameters which 'specialise' our Freeview service. (I believe I understand why we've chosen 720p and I'm not questioning that decision.)

Who's using this format now ? I believe Norway is and that those planning or thinking about it include Germany, Korea, HK, Russia, Ukraine & Lithuania. But I don't know if they are just similar - or identical - in specification to what we shall have ?

I find it confusing that the DVB-T 'standard' includes both MPEG2 and H.264 and that the compression used is seldom qualified when saying that a service uses 'the standard DVB-T'. Possibly this is a temporary aberation and it will become the norm to distinguish the compression used. (I think back to USB and USB2 in USB2's early days - before people insisted on designating the lesser version as USB1.1).

Anyone who can straighten me out ?

The DVB standards recently(3-4yrs ago) added the mpeg4 H.264/AVC option that most broadcasters are now adopting, or intend to adopt in future upgrades. All chipsets that I have seen that support mpeg4 will also support mpeg2, in reality mpeg2 just ends up being one of the many subroutines of mpeg4.

DVB standards do require that all HD STBs support all current SD frames rates/sizes as well as 720p and 1080i, they must be able ot output these natively but may in addition be able to scale between 720p and 1080i, they must support SD downscaling of HD material. The end result is that all mpeg4 STB's must support 720p and 1080i, this is mandatory, the fact that different broadcasters will do one or the other or both is not an issue. As an example SkyUK have most HD channels as 1080i, however the sports channels are 720p (well that was how they ran it 12months ago it may have changed).

All the chipsets that I have seen support a very full feature list of options, essentially if the STB supports mpeg4 H.264/AVC then it will have most bases covered.

Edit, having just checked it would seem that even though SkyUK originally stated they would do 720p on Sports it would seem for now that they have just left things in 1080i.
