I have got a sony 40EX520 TV. It is about 2 and a half years old. In the last week it has developed an intermitent problem where the IR receiver on the TV stops working. I have several  TV remotes that can all control the TV, and when this happens none of them work. So it isn't the remote. Normally when you press a button on the remote, the light on the TV flashes to show it has received the signal, but when this occurs, the light doesn't change.  I also changed the batteries in all the remotes to make sure. Also it isn't the room lighting interfering, as I turned off all lights to see if that made a difference. I have also turned off the TV and unplugged all devices from it for a few minutes and turned it back on, and the problem continues. The buttons on the side of the TV all continue to work. However maybe after 20 minutes the IR receiver starts to work again. It has happned 3 times in the last week. Previous to this, it never happened. I also have the latest sony firmware, and nothing else has changed or been connected to the TV for months. Anyone know what the issue could be. Because it is intermittent, I can't really take it in for repair, because the problem is unlikely to reoccur when they test it, and I don't know what triggers it. I basically find that after watching the screen for a while, when I want to turn it off, or change the volume, it doesn't work, but it can go for days without it reoccurring. I do have a Sony home theatre (is a listed compatible device for this model) connected to it via HDMI which has been connected since December. But this problem occurred both when I had it connected, and after I disconnected it for testing, so I don't believe that has anything to do with it. Anyone have any ideas or come across this type of problem before?

I suspect your only option is to have it serviced - even if they can't reproduce they may be able to replace a board or receiver. Consumer guarantees likely covers it - a TV should work for at least 5 years without repair.

As Timmmay says. Also, it may be a known fault. Worth talking to the service agent at least.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Thanks. I might video it when / if it happens again, that way I can prove the problem occurs to them. The big problem with dealing with these companies with products that have intermittent problems, is that the item is often returned , with no fault found or replicated. So a video is one way I guess for them to see it, and they would be able to see it on youtube if I upload it onto there.

I had a customer with the exact same issue with her Sony TV. She had been putting up with it for months as she couldn't be bothered getting it serviced.

Would be great to know what the fix is.

Check if any CFL bulbs are present and switched on.
They can interfere with IR signals.

I had that problem a few years ago with a Sony TV and I eventually traced it to that. Turn light off - problem evaporates, turn light on - problem exists.
I thought it was an intermittent problem too.
