Hi.

I have a friend who has asked for some advice on how he can get golf on his PC and TV now that Sky no longer holds the rights...

He is prepared to consider the purchase of a new Smart TV, and has availability of Fibre. His current provider is Vodafone.

I am wondering if instead of a SmartTV, he just goes and gets himself a AppleTV or FireTV, Roku or similar sort of box and attach it.

Anyone got this working and able to shed light on what AV box he should consider?

They don't have a Roku app unfortunately. Air Play from iOS to Apple TV works, I think, but not sure how live sports works, if the quality is any good etc...

I watch PLP on my laptop or tablet, hooking up to the tv is a pain in the a$$.

So they can't play direct from the Apple TV App to the TV? Do They need to stream it from a PC? (They don't have nor do they want a MAC)

They released the Samsung app for smart tv's yesterday.   Adding your username and password is a bit of a mission.  To be frank, the quality of the video is crap, worse that being on dial up.  Video freezes after about a minute but the audio carries on. So i'm guessing a bit more work required to improve this.

Until then its back to the laptop and hdmi cable.

Wow ok that sounds terrible considering the fee's they are charging. I'd imagine when they gave the rights to Coliseum they would have said they required to be able to provide HD coverage over a reasonable connection.

What about accessing Coliseum from an iPad and Airplaying it to Apple TV would that work ok ?

My mum (an avid golfer) was staying with us recently and wanted to watch Lydia Ko play in the Australian Womens Open - she'd had an email giving her free access through the Coliseum coverage (www.worldgolfpass.com).  Luckily we have a media PC and can just watch through a browser on the TV - but it was still an exercise in getting signed up, entering logins and passwords, then controlling the coverage via a media player embedded in browser window etc. There was no way she could have done it herself at home.

In my opinion this will absolutely kill golf coverage in NZ. I don't know what the stats are on the average age of golfers here, but I'd hazard a guess that it's of an age where getting setup to watch online coverage of anything will prove to be difficult, and most likely just "too hard". In the end the sport as a whole suffers...

Sorry to hijack the thread, perhaps the answer is to buy a bare bones PC to watch through a browser?

One of those windows 8.1 TV boxes would be ideal for this, HDMI out and just add a wireless keyboard and mouse combo to it.

This friend of mine is >60 and not tech savy, if he can't stream it from a PC or Ipad, it's gonna be a sad state of affairs.

I read that as him saying the Samsung TV app is crap, but it works fine from a laptop. I'm probably out on a limb round here with all the app/device fanbois but if it works on a PC, to me it's working as intended.

It works on a Samsung Tablet using the App.

I don't have an Ipad or apple tv to test.  And it inst available for Amazon TV fire.

I've sent an email to Coliseum support, haven't had a reply yet.

That solution is typically very very good. My Lightbox is perfect on the Airplay to ATV, to TV, while my rMBP does not play as well on the browser. Its fine, but its not perfect. The side benefit of the iPad is there might be a time when its not ideal to watch the TV, it can be watched directly on the iPad too.
