Hi all

Is anyone else using one of these motherboards or tv cards for Mediaportal?
It took me 2 weeks to get it working well and I might be able to assist some of you in getting it up and running.
By all accounts on the net it seems to be plagued with bugs and problems but I have more or less running stable now.

I still have a big wish list I am working on

For instance:
1. I want to be able to program the hauppauge remote to run mediaportal in case it crashes and I need to restart it.
2. It doesn't play some .avi files while it still plays others. May be a codec issue
3. The time recording seems to be out by half an hour although the time seems to be correct and the time in the guide is correct it starts recording half an hour early and therefore misses the last half hour of scheduled recordings.
4. I want a dvd ripping plugin. (And something to copy vcds to my video library would be great too!)
5. I want to set up the epg data to update from the internet but I cannot get my head around xmltvnz etc and how to use them in mediaportal
6. I am having trouble getting the movie database properties working.
7. The remote is too sensitive and picks up commands for my television and av receiver.
8. The preview window in the tv screen doesn't work very well. It flickers in and out all the time. The television channels work perfectly though.
9. I am communicating wirelessly and I want to set up a folder so when I drag a file to it, it will move it across to the HTPC. Not just simple synchronisation because I do not want to store the file twice but rather move it across my wireless network.
10. I need to set up my HTPC with a static i or configure my wireless connection so it can automatically find the ip as it keeps changing.

Plus I add more to it every day.
Although at times painful, I am loving my home theatre pc and if this bit of hardware is frustrating anyone and you want a hand or you can offer some advice or ideas on the things I am still working on then by all mean drop me a line.

For what it's worth, I have a Asus P5PE-VM with an HVR3000, and it runs like a dog (recording is really jumpy). I've narrowed it down to being either the power supply or motherboard. Have tested the card in my other rig (using an Asus P5B), as well as someone elses P4 kinda job.

I don't know how to fix it either, i'm just avoiding it for the moment.

Have you got it working OK with WinTV, or GB-PVR? I have only briefly played with MediaPortal.

Hi

For some reason it struggled to find the channels in GBPVR.
I was using GBPVR 10016 and it didn't do too well. I used the tuning assistant and told it I had an HVR4000 aafter ticking only show cards detected and after it had searched right through there were no channels.
It surprised me because I had seen posts earlier saying how easy it was to get up and running with GBPVR.

1, you should be able to set up the remote.ini file C:\windows\remote.ini to [Default] grnpower=mediaportal exe (i do this on gbpvr).
2, yep, if you're not fussy, you could try ffsdhow for codec (if supported in MP)

5. Can you not use EPG from your hvr4000 (dvb epg) I do this with my HVR000

I use an ASUS m2V with a PVR500 and an HVR3000 and a pvr150 for my cable box (usb-uirt controlling) but this is in gbpvr.  I'm using the supplied remote with the HVR3000.

I did have the odd issue with tuning in GB, but there's a new release coming that may help you, as sub worked me for a days or so to sort out a similar sounding issue to you, if you tried scanning for channels a couple of time, do you get them then?

I have a friend who jumps between MP and gbpvr, he love the recording engine to gb as the most stable, but prefers to look athe the full transport stream rip of MP (to grab the whole feed from one Transponder off the sat and pull the programmes out of that).

Hope some of my answer help.

Where in the irremote.ini is the part where you enter the info? There seems to be 1001 places where it says default. Some have info in them mapped to the buttons and some are blank.

I thought I had the epg data sorted. I dont want to use get epg from data stream because it takes too long and I prefer to update it on a schedule.

I extracted xmltvnz to my xmltv folder in mediaportal and made a batch file off the xmltvnz site and it appeared to be working and then when I entered media portal again I only had channel 4 and tv3 listed over and over again and all the other channels were gone.
Because of this particular hardware I have to be wary of any changes I make because it throws its toys out of the cot very easily.

What bios version do you have on the M2A?

These motherboards are definately a bit of a dog. I purchased one in June to build up a new PVR unaware of the issue as the first few review were great. Having said that however I'm now running the latest 1401 bios under Vista and it is rock solid. The only issue is video tearing which seems to be an issue with the X1250 chipset and can't be fully eliminated without buying a decent video card.

I run GB-PVR and use xmltvnz for my EPG - this really is the most reliable way of getting EPG data.

None of the issues above are related to the video card or motherboard, they are just related to your setup so upgrading the bios isn't going to help any of them. The latest bios does seem to have improved the system performance.

Are you running Vista or XP? If you're running Vista make sure you have the latest ATI Catalyst drivers as they get better on every release.

I am using the latest ati drivers.
I did update to the latest bios 1501 but yet to see if it has any effect.
I agree so far most of the issues seem to have been related to the display drivers but also Mediaportal seems to have quite a few bugs.
If may give GBPVR another try at a later stage.

Apart from when I make changes it is stable so I am happy with it. It has just been a mission.

There are some major issues with some of the ASUS boards. I have checked with suppliers but there doesn't seem to be a fix except for getting another board. The Gigabyte GA-MA69's are excellent. Especially the ones with onboard DVI, VGA and HDMI (not on an expansion card)

I have at times wished I had gone for a different board.

I read the reviews on this one before buying carefully and they all seemed to be saying quite good tings but it hasn't lived up to its hype at all.
It was only when reading mediaportal and gbpvr forums that I started to spot problems with this board and by then it was too late.

I will soldier on with it though as it is nearly there now.

Good to have recommendations for those who are still looking for a good motherboard though. Others may wish to steer clear of this one.
Thanks

MSI G33-M board here + HVR-4000.  Absolutely no hardware issues at all (except for the burnt out SPDIF header on the motherboard - don't ask).  Not using the onboard video, elected to go a 8600GTS.

I would definately avoid them but having said that mine is now rock solid and I only have the issue with video tearing. This isn't that evident on a smaller monitor but since I have my PVR running through my 50" Plasma it does become quite apparent.

I was just going to upgrade my video card but since I have both PCI slots full it would mean losing the SPDIF output since that's on the PCIx riser card so will probably ditch the board in a few months and upgrade. The Gigabyte 690G boards that Brad mentioned above are pretty good but I don't see any point in sticking with the same chipset, I'll wait for something newer.

You're not going to fix many of your problems by changing motherboards. You've just introduced yourself to the world of PVR's where you can easily spend far more time trying to get things going than actually watcing TV! :-)

Youre not wrong there! Although I am happy with its performance at the moment. I am just tweaking it a bit now and then and the wish list grows longer and shorter al the time but it is not a full time hobby.
It is a pretty good system and I am content at the moment but at least with the HTPC you can easily upgrade and swap components without too many issues.

Just realised I missed part of your question Allstarnz.
Yes I have got it working with wintv just not gbpvr yet.

In wintv it works perfectly. Just make sure you download cd v4.0 driver and satellite hotfix from the Hauppauge Singapore support site first.

Cheers
