Anyone made a Samsung Blu-ray player region free? In particular the BD-H5500 model.

Few Blurays I want from the US that aren't available in NZ.

Personally, if I was you, I'd buy a US BluRay player that works natively on NZ power at the same time as the discs...

I didn't think it was possible to multi-zone a BR player, only the DVD playback function. I think there used to be one or two models that with a bit of work could be made BR multi-zone, but to the best of my knowledge they disappeared from the market. Happy to stand corrected but I think you are out of luck.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Oppo blu ray players can be easily made region free for blu ray discs. Unsure about any other brands though.

If you want to de-region a bluray player, you have picked the wrong brand. Samsung and Sony units are the most locked down of all.

Either scout around until you find a de-regionable model and buy that, or land a second player from the US (and check voltage compatibility if you do). As far as I know, you are wasting your time trying to de-region a Samsung.

I did that but it required a hardware mod. Nothing fancy - just a daughter board that plugged into the main board and then region selection could be done with the remote.

I think it was this kit for the BDP-80

Hardly use that feature now since if I cannot play a local BD (my Oppo was originally set to region A) then I just rip it and stick it on the server.
