Having set up OpenELEC on a dedicated PC/NAS-based system, I have it running fairly sweetly, using either my iPhone and XBMC Remote or a Logitech k830 illuminated RF keyboard for remote control.

The problems I'm finding is that the iPhone doesn't wake the system from suspend (and requires unlocking my phone each time I use it too). The keyboard does but is too large for simple use, and I have to remember all the key combos which can distract from the in-the-moment of watching good movie.

So while I can live with it, these solutions are not ideal.

I've had a look for remote controls and wonder what others are doing here? I don't want to spend $$$ for a Harmony do-everything remote, and wonder if I can get an IR Blaster for cheap and then select other more budget remotes? Alternatively would an RF-based remote work as well?

Searching on PriceSpy doesn't reveal much in the way of IR Blasters or similar, so do I have to import something special from Amazon etc?

So if anyone has found a solution that doesn't cost the earth while working intuitively, I'd love to know.

Cheers
Jon

You can get the base model Harmony remote for around $55 at PB Tech (the 350) which should do the job - controls up to 8 devices.

No IR Receiver tho... I need one of those. Who sells these? I was in PB Tech this afternoon and they don't.

You can setup wakeonlan app on your mobile and this will solve stand by issue (it should be enabled in bios of your PC as well). Then you can buy some used android cheapie as dedicated device for that.

Yes, that was what I was going to suggest.

There are retailers in NZ like Piishop or there's Amazon.

Thanks for the info on the flirc. I'll look into it.

I'm not sure about WOL- it's actually WWOL as I'm using an AC-class WiFi card in a PCI-e slot. WOL is enabled in BIOS (and PCI-e events should wake it as well) but perhaps the Kodi remote isn't sending the right magic packet. I've an old android handset lying around so will see about that.

I think the flirc may well be the answer I'm looking for.

I use an All 4 One URC-6440 with an MCE receiver. To me a remote should have as few buttons as possible. All the logic/intelligence should be handled at the receiving end not the remote. It should be very tactile, you shouldn't need to look at it.

Most of all it should be fast. RF remotes have way too much lag for my liking. A remote with a display is a gimmick, about as useful as using a smart phone as a remote.

The CEC protocol is way to slow for remotes.

All the harmony remotes I've tried are way to laggy, even after tuning all the delay/repeat parameters. Controlling a beautiful HTPC interface should be fast and 'snappy'. There should be no perceivable lag between pressing a button and seeing the result.

That's my 2¢ on remotes.

P.s. MCE receiver can be had on ebay cheap as chips.

Thanks for the comment mcraenz, makes perfect sense.

I've ordered a flirc from the Pi Shop to go with an old remote I'll scrounge.

Waiting for delivery, I'll update the thread a little later with my findings.

Flirc is hella expensive for what it does - only buy one if you have an existing remote that you MUST use.

I use one of these:

~$6 with free shipping, or you can pay twice as much on Trademe...

MCE receivers (including genetic ones) work with any remote, using something like eventghost.

I grabbed a MCE remote + ir receiver off ebay for like $15 delivered.  Only took a week or so (that varies greatly seller to seller)

I have xbmc on a pc. i use a logitech remote and hp ir receiver. it works great as having the customisation of the remote and keymap changes ive got it doing stuff that is intuitive like one button audio time sync shifting without having to go into the menus while watching....its a great solution.

the only issue i have since moving to a new house is that i had to add an ir repeater into the system. now when i use the remote to scroll down the lists of content it wont scroll as it did without the repeater. i have to click click click down which is annoying forcing me to go back to using the keyboard i dont know if this is a limitation of the repeater or hp reciever or what.

Oh and having the remote with screen is great as it means you can custom label things like when listening to radio i have my buttons labelled with station names. when in htpc mode it allows me to launch xbmc or fick back to windows mode etc. custom labels using the screen is why i love my logitech 785

Sorry for multiple posts but why not just edit the keymap instead of using flirc etc
