Hi,

Does anyone know if this could be possible? A USB wall plate to ethernet back to usb wall plate?

or anyway to get a USB device from downstairs in a different rooms hooked up to a computer.... I was thinking ethernet because it is easy to run, but I know I can do usb cable attached to wall plates, but wanted to know if I can transfer USB signal over ethernet?

Depending on the devices that you want to hook in to, I would be worried about cable length...

Yup.  USB was only deisgned to run approximately 5m without amplicification.  If you want to access a USB socket further away, your best bet is either to daisy chain through powered hubs (up to 5 hubs I believe) or to invest in a USB over Cat5 powered converter.

Here is a powered USB over IP hub that I found when investigating options for a remote USB soundcard.  Also works over the internet!

There are less expensive software only options if there is a computer at both ends.

There are adapters for usb over Ethernet. Haven't used mine yet, but, I brought one of these (just for mce remote, so, not high data rates).

I got a USB over IP box from jaycar to run a multifunction inkjet off the laptop without having to plug it in.

Anyway, the inkjet died and newer ones with wifi were dirt cheap (like pay me to take one) so I had the box spare.

Ive tried it on several things - Arduinos - somewhat sucessful except the leonardo which re-enumerates as a programming port but the box is too slow to present it to the PC as a new device to work.
Speakers - Choppy audio, latency no good.
Microphone - better than speakers but still not perfect.
bluetooth dongle - no go.
flash drives - work fine but about 3MB/s maximum on a good day.
Games controllers - seems alright.

I use a pair of these over about 15M. Mine only seem to do USB 1.1. Not sure if that's related to the type I have or just the distance. It's fine for me because I only use a remote receiver and Bluetooth dongle for mini a keyboard. Would be no good for storage though. What device(s) do you want to run?
