My hearing isn't the greatest, so when I watch TV (which is about 3m away) I use wired headphones plugged into my Sony receiver.

But the cable is a nuisance. Anyone able to recommend some wireless or bluetooth cans? The TV has some spare audio-out RCA ports and I assume I can feed the headset from there. Alternatively, I could plug the headphone 'transmitter' into my Sony STRDA 1200 ES Receiver which is right alongside me. Price range...say $350 - $400.

I asked this question here in 2009 but did nothing about it. Now, I notice that there's a huge range of wireless headsets available. So many that I have absolutely no idea which would suit my situation best. Also, I don't know whether I should be looking for 'wireless' or 'bluetooth' devices. What's the difference?

Note that this is a transmitter, not a reciever.

Just a suggestion. The only issue could be a slight bluetooth delay. You can adjust most sets these days for this.

I have the bluetooth transmitter above but haven't unwrapped it.

I have always found there is an audio lag when using Bluetooth headphones - not much, but enough to make lip sync annoyingly out. So I think the dedicated 2.4Ghz(?) ones might be better

Hairy1, that 'dongle' thingy seems to have a USB port. What's that for? I mean, my Bravia TV only has RCA audio out. If I were to use that gadget, how would I adapt it to work with RCA? Its other port is, I assume, a power input?

Re the phones, they're 'on-ear', aren't they? As opposed to 'over-ear', which would be my preference.

SHK292: If Bluetooth is subject to lag, I don't think I'd go for it. What's with 2.4GHZ? Is that another name for regular 'wireless'?

I have a pair of Senhiesser RS170's that will connect via the 3.5mm jack on your TV. Really good headphones, hard to beat for the money $220 is the price I am asking for them.

Yes, normal wireless with a sender you plug into the TV's headphone socket, rather than Bluetooth. Although you can get Bluetooth senders which plug into headphone/AV out port

SHK292: So a Bluetooth sender could plug into my receiver's 6.5mm headphone outlet? Seeing as how it's only half a meter away that'd be more direct than something plugged into the TV at 3m away, wouldn't it? Or would it still be subject to lag?

Yes. The USB port charges the transmitter. The transmitter plugs into the recievers headphone outlet (or TV headphone out) and then you connect it to a bluetooth headset wirelessly. It is a roundabout way of doing the same thing that the dedicated wireless headphones use. It is handy if you have an existing bluetooth headset you want to use.

The lag comes not from the distance but from slight delay in processing the audio signal to bluetooth in the device itself.

I'm using the Jabra MOVE wireless they are very good in my opinion but I'm no audiophile. They also review very well online. My use case is primarily spotify and podcasts.
