Google sucks.
Just bought a Chromecast Audio expecting to be able to stream mp3's from my server to my stereo.
Turns out Google Play Music wont access a shared network drive.
Apparently I have to go to all the trouble of uploading my files to the cloud just so I can download them again.
Surely there must be a better way?!

Is there a Sonos like app out there that will play radio stations, scan my music share and categorise it, make playlists, etc and then push them to the "puck"?

I have a regular Chromecast so this /may not/ work with the CC audio.

1) Use Plex - have Plex read your music / video directories and from there use the Plex app on a smartphone / PC to cast your content to the CC / CC audio.
2) Use Spotify - I have not tested this but I think you can cast local content via Spotify to the Chromecast.
3) Google Play music does offer a free service to upload all your music to the cloud making it available to any device + streamable to the CC. This is a bit annoying like you say (seeing it uses a chunk of upload) however once it is done it is easy to maintain and stays in high quality.

I'm still decidedly on the fence over this exact issue on the Chromecast Audio. Will wait to see how it pans out, especially with the proposed multi-room update.

For now, I have an FM transmitter (C.Crane FM Transmitter 2) hooked up to my HTPC. No proprietry restrictions, and plenty enough signal over our entire house for any FM radio to take advantage of.

I may get even more enthusiastic and pick up an EDM FM transmitter +/- an ultimizer for even better sound quality.

I use BubblePnP to cast movies and musoc from my NAS. (Sorry though - wont do radio or label music)
But have not paid for the app so limited to 12 song playlist to queue up music.
Works fine - try it and pay if you want a larger playlist.
Spotify Premium also seemed to work - not tried local files on Spotify Free
