I have the baby act80 sound bar and a bravia kdl-50w700b.

I have connected the optical cable. When I move the cursor around I hear nothing. Does this mean I wont hear anything unless its a digital input?

Thats a real f up sony if thats the case.

I only bought the sound bar to replace the tv speakers for everything, including the TV noises. :-(

You mean HT-CT80 Soundbar?

When you say 'moving cursor' what do you mean? On the Sony website where this model is found it has a note about Windows 10 compatiability.

Anyhow, is the optical light "on" after you plugged it in and selected "Optical" from the remote?

Are you simply watching TV or is there somthing else plugged into the TV e.g. a SKY box or somthing.

Im simply navigating the Smart UI, it use to have beeps etc when moving from icon to icon, they are clearly not digital hence why i dont get a sound. same as when navigating netflix, of course playing netflix i get sound etc.

Ok,

Firstly, you need to follow the guide that came with soundbar and select "optical" on its remote.

Then I believe you will need to tell the TV to use the optical output. This will be found in the sound settings / set up of the TV.

edit: can you describe your set up please i.e. TV and what else is connected etc and how it is connected.

Okay... but the soundbar isn't choosing what to play, your TV is choosing what it sends out the optical port.

If anything I'd find it less annoying!

yeah i get what you mean, the mrs says the same thing re the beeps. but i just assumed any noise from the tv would be played by the sound bar.

does it mean ill have to buy a 2 channel red/yellow to what looks like a microphone import to get the non "digital" noises from my tv and swap over to optical once the movie starts?

i really feel motivated to become a product designer.

To be quite honest Im dissapointed with the clarity, at first I thought it was good, then I realised the TV was just as good clarity. What is better is the sub, but I dont know if it was worth the money.

I considered a logitech 5.1 surround system for a budget, but not sure if it will work with netflix

To be honest, $299 RRP soundbars are rubbish at the best of times.

Move up the chain for a better result...

better than the TV for clarity though, but not in loudness, strange considering 16w vs 40w (minus 40w sub)

They may claim 40W, but they don't always mention how they reach that figure... how much distortion there is, what frequency they achieved the rating at etc etc...

luckily i think its capped before full volume because at full volume there is no clipping or distortion. its just not that loud. oh well better to be clear than loud, can still hear it above a kettle boiling where as before at same volume you couldnt make out what was being said.

Hmmm sounds more like you need to buy a quieter Kettle
