My wife is a media teacher at her secondary school. She needs to sound proof (not completely) her class foyer/storeroom to turn it into an editing and sound booth. Any ideas to do this as cheap as possible?

Thanks in advance.

Egg trays are very effective and cheap. Have used them before and been in many music rooms that have used egg trays.

As this is a commercial place, be very careful to comply with any requirements for fireproofness etc. I have no idea what they are, but I do know that a friend was made to pull heaps of foam down at an inspection at a workplace they had put some up in by a fire inspection guy.

You can buy sheets of pyramidal/Toblerone-shaped foam, in various sizes of pyramid, for this purpose at Para Rubber outlets.

Maybe outside your budget.

You can buy this stuff called Autex that is basically like a thick fabric pinboard. It comes in different colours and helps with sound proofing.

I agree with richms regarding fire regulations, especially in a school/educational environment.

I believe the least problematic approach is flexible one, to deaden a small environment I would take a small trick from recording studios. Portable acoustic panels, she needs 4+ panels to arrange around the environment. The aim is to target direct sounds into the space and 1st reflective sound from bouncing back. Moveable panels can be adjusted to suit, then removed out of the way. In a multi use room this works well.

Sometimes panels of this type can be had cheap from business supplies second hand, but you can also DIY them. Just research what can be used for materials regarding fire regulations.

ET: "Maybe; you have some freewill, but you chose your path by arrangement"

Me "That sounds like a program with no freewill?"

ET: "We will catch up when you end this cycle"

Me: "Sounds like a 'KPI'!"

ET: "Did you read the terms and conditions?"
