Hi just curious about this not too seriously though.
Would a bluray player play cds with an audio quality similar to a standard stand alone cd player?
I know the higher spec cd players would be better and I play cds once in a blue moon, normally use my fiiox5 2 as the source. Im using Cambridge Audio 651a and Wharfedale diamond 10.6 and my bluray player is a panasonic BD60. so entry level gear in the audiophile community but pretty much all I need.

There might be a number of "it depends" answers.

As I understand it, if you use a digital output (HDMI or optical) then the amp/receiver is doing the decoding so it's not going to matter whether the transport is a BD or CD player. But I don't think the 651A has digital inputs, although I'm not really familiar with Cambridge Audio. If it only has analogue RCA inputs then it might make a difference - I did hear that the analogue output stage is somewhere BD player manufacturers tend to scrimp on the quality, but that was just heresay in an audio/video website forum, not the result of any conclusive research.

One I had did resampling to 48kHz on audio CD's - and very poorly.

For your minimal use and associated gear, I wouldn't worry about it - I doubt you would hear much difference. I would however go SPDIF or Digital Coax from the Bluray to the amp if possible as the amp will likely have a better DAC.

i've done this comparison.

in a stereo music system using the players' analogue outputs;

most mianstream bdps aren't very good at playing music cd's.

a panny bd60 is good for a bdp but the bd80 with its more sophiticated audio stage is better again.

a standalone cdp like a cambridge 640c or 650bd/752bd are much better.
