Hi,

I have seen this article about Sky TV and Foxtel merging, I for one think it would be great for us as Foxtel has some channel's I would like e.g. SciFi channel, vh1 and more movie channels. What do you guy's think? http://www.stuff.co.nz/4418229a13.html P.S. this link works.

I aim to misbehave.

If SkyTV and Foxtel merged, and TCL gets its feed from SkyTV, does that also mean that TCL digital TV gets what fed to SkyTV from Foxtel?

IF SO... maybe my wish for Cartoon Network Boomerang will be here SOON!! YAY!?!

 Hi,

Since Telstra own 50% of Foxtel then you might find that Telstraclear cable could be rebranded, as in Australia to Foxtel cable, It would be a better fit for telstra and everyone wins.

just had a check on Wiki about Foxtel... looks like most SkyTV's initiative are set in place for similar service with Foxtel. Like the +2 timeshift on Movie 2 (Foxtel +2), SkyTV Mobile (Foxtel on Mobile), MySky (Foxtel IQ)... perhaps looking at what's being offered by Foxtel, and with the recent rumour of SkyTV + Foxtel merger, all could add up and end up as Telstra(Clear)'s big plan for Pay-TV service?

Hmmm... could it also mean with TCL's core tv upgrade pathing the way to get ready for all these upgrades?

I think it's a win win for everybody and to be honest can't actually see any downsides to the deal. We're always going to be ripped off price wise on anything owned by Murdoch but in terms of content it would seem an obvious business decision.

what are the possible negatives about this?  Would we lose any unique NZ programming?

What about things like the Rugby Channel?  Would it then result in us getting more AFL programming on Fox/Sky Sports?  What about conflicting contracts (A1GP is a good example of this(TV 3 v Foxtel), as is Six Nations (The Rugby Channel v Setanta)).

So many questions.

Guess this would be at least 18 months away anyhow.

Well I hope they don't standardise the price as well if it does happen.

For Sky standard + sport + movies = NZ$83.76

Foxtel standard + sport + movies + Extras which are standard with Sky = AUS$97.8 or NZ$112.95

Granted all up there are a few more (crap) channels that you ultimately get with the foxtel package but I hardly think the shopping network is worth the extra.

I remember hearing people saying that Foxtel was expensive in comparison to Sky so I definitely wouldn't want their pricing package.

Well I guess it depends on what model you like. They've basically just spread the cost of the new decoder over 3 years so if you have it for more than 3 years then you're just providing them with straight profit.

Hate to think how long I've had our sky decoder but it's definitely longer than 3 years.

Still we'll see what Sky do with upgrades from mySky to mySkyHD. Could be nasty if they try to shaft people too much.

just thinking about it some more, I think that if this came to fruition, they would have to have certain channels (particuarly sport) which are only on a particular countries spot beam.  Particuarly due to Australias anti siphoning laws there is a problem where Sky owns a lot of content that can't be brodcast on Pay TV in Aus, such as cricket, which is owned by Nein.

For a lot of the the general entertainment, movies, news etc, this'd work great though.  It might mean we finally get Sky interactive.

Hi,

What they can do is what happens in Canada, most/all cable + Sat. companies broadcast the major US networks but say fox is showing Prison Break and a Canadian channel own the Canada rights then they bring in Sim subbing. Where the canadian channel gets it's broadcast put in place of Fox's. This way they show Canadian adverts instead of the US feed. I think this would work here. The only thing to screw this up is that Aus + NZ will need to broadcast the shows at the same time and due to the time difference I am sure they can do a -2 for NZ (like History channel). If the FTA own the right's then it is no problem.

If such a deal went ahead I think you would find it would only effect non current channels, I mean we already share some of the doco type channels, most of the kids channels are also shared and broadcast simulteously. Movie channels, PPV and OnDemand services would easily work off a common transmission. The rest is pretty independant, but there are plenty of savings to be made in the above services.

And obviously the purchasing power of a combined group is just as fruitfull if not more as sharing transponder space.

With all those cost savings I bet the subscription price would not go down .  most likely up citing the merger costs as the reason..

There is a reason why Sky is the 6th largest company on the NZ Stockmarket, and it's not because they are in the business of providing reasonably priced subscriber TV to the NZ population.  And Telecom is #1... don't get me started ;)

Oh most certainly, such a merger would require a whole team of lawyers to have their palms greased, and share holders would not begin paying for that would they now ;)
