hi all,

(mods) if this is the wrong forum, sorry, please fix :)

in the old days i used to convert my avi/mpg movies to dvd format and would then burn as I wanted to play them in my dvd player (connected to amp) so I could get the AC3/DTS soundtrack.

recently have purchased an external soundblaster (have a laptop connected to plasma) so can play the movies on laptop and the amp does the sound proccessing - works great!

although ... when i burnt the movies to dvd the aspect ratio was taken into account - therefore if it was an "anamorphic" movie there would be no black  bars .. but now when playing via laptop it doesnt get the aspect ratio and there are always bars.

guess i am waffling ... just wondering is there a media player or plugin available that will play the proper aspect ratio on my plasma?

thanks all!

alan

VLC Media player is a free media player with lots of aspect and cropping options. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

It also plays lots of formats.

Cheers,

Matt

What resolution are you running your Plasma at? You ideally need to use a resoltuion such as 1280x768/720 or 1366x768/720 or 1920x1080 if your TV supports it as these are 16:9 aspect ratios. If you try something like 1024x768 it's only a 4:3 ratio so you won't look as nice.

use vlc player and use the crop setting when you right click on the playing movie. that's assuming your content, signal output (as sbiddle said), tv setting/processing is not to be blamed for having the black bars
