I suspect he is talking about a Quad Output LNB such as these, which are common in the UK for Sky+ Installers (MySky UK) Not so common in NZ as Sky and Freeview all transmit on the same polarity and from the same satellite, so you can take a single feed, and pump it around the house. Otherwise going for a dual output and switch would be the way to go.  Something like this off trademe.

Yep assuming you are only interested in Optus D1, Sky and FreeView then a single output LNB and a Lband rated splitter is all that is required to run multiple STB in this part of the woods. Only one STB need power the LNB although it will need to be power at all times. If that does not suit then ensure you get a DC pass all ports splitter.
