Sky apparently has 10 Rio pop-up channels. When I scan the normal Optus D1 transponders in MediaPortal I only get Rio HD 1 -4. Are they using a different transponder? Anyone else scanned in more?

I can't answer your question, but there are only 4 HD Rio channels which I call Sky Sport 5 to 8 HD and I've had configured in my HTPC for a couple of years. The other popup channels are all SD which I can't be bothered with. Anything that's worth watching is likely to be on an HD channel.
