Has anyone tried or used one of these receivers?

I'm looking at picking up a reasonable HT/music system some time soon.  I have a 42" LCD (720p/1080i) and PS3 will be my main source for the time being.  I also want to buy a new turntable, thinking the Pro-ject Debut III so a phono input is good.

This Denon seems quite good, Eastern Hi-Fi have a sale coming up I think.  But what speakers would be a good match?

Otherwise, any other suggestions for amp/speakers in the $2000 range (excluding TT)?  Is that price realistic?

The Denon 2308 has all the features you'll need for the immediate future and is a good match for your TV and PS3. The Onkyo 705 could be an alternative and it adds Dolby HD and DTS Master Audio decoding....not that you need them especially with the PS3 as source.

Another option is the Yamaha RXV661 which Paul Money have at $1075 on their site at the moment. I think it is in runnout for the RXV663 but has very similar feature set to the 2308.

I'm not much up on speaker prices but are a great fan of Image loudspeakers which are also a kiwi product.

Very true. The PS3 decodes Dolby TrueHD internally and outputs MLPCM so any AVR that can process HDMI 1.1 audio would work. As for DTS-HD Master it can't do that yet but the rumour is when it can, it will be PCM, not bitstream.

Without checking do any of the choices you mention have Phono input stages or are you planning to use an external phono preamp?

All these have mm phono inputs. Marantz seemed to be the main brand that dropped phono stages some years ago.
