Have an old stereo with standard left + right speaker terminals, says 6-61 ohm

currently have 6 ohm speakers connected

Have a spare 8 ohm speaker, can I connect it to one channel aswell as the 6 ohm speaker? 6-61 ohm sounds like allot, surely this stereo cannot support a 61 ohm load?

61 ohms is unusual, sure its not 16?

Anyway, 16 is a lower load than 6. If you connect 2 sets up then you would be below 6 ohms if in parallel and cause the amp to work harder and distort more and probably overheat if you use it over about 1/3 power.

If you connect them in series then it will be 14 ohms which will be fine, but then the speakers will be affecting each other and it will probably sound horrible and not very loud.

"... says 6-61 ohm"

Almost certainly "6-16 ohm".

As above, if you connect the extra speaker in series it will sound horrible, and if you connect it in parallel it will probably overload the amplifier.

And it will only work on one channel, which will sound horrible with stereo material.

Don't do it.  undecided

if you have an old stereo and you want to play, go for it. it won't explode, if you're unlucky you need to buy a new stereo. but no fireworks -sorry to disappoint
