Looking at getting one of these, and was wondering if there are any owners that can comment on them.

Will be replacing a Panasonic VT50 Plasma which is being moved to a different room.

Black levels have always been a big thing for me, and I know that LCD will never be as good as as the VT50 in this regard, but how does the X9300D stack up?

Hi Paul,

I thought about Sony this time around but went with Samsung and I like the picture quality of the Samsung KS8000.  What price can you get the Sony for that would be a determining factor if the price is right go for it.

For great blacks, LG OLED.

Way, way more expensive, but oh, so pretty. I'm hoping that next time I'm allowed to buy a TV, OLED prices have come down.

The 55" is a little under $3000 at the moment and ideally don't want to spend more than that.

While I could squeeze a 65" into the space, it would mean getting a lower spec TV, so I'd rather get a high end 55" than a mid range 65".

I am certainly open to recommendations of other TVs. I mainly was looking at the Sony because of the local dimming to improve black levels and their good reputation for upscaling quality. 4K HDR, HDCP 2.2 etc is all a must.

Primary use will be movie and TV viewing, although there will be some console gaming as well (and I have just been reading about Sony TVs having quite a high input lag, which I never would have thought of but now I am somewhat concerned about it).

I do like good black levels, but the missus prefers the lights on in the living room (although dimmed) when we are watching stuff so OLED level blacks probably aren't required. The old VT50 plasma will be going to the bedroom, where viewing and gaming with lights off completely is far more frequent.

Agreed, but they are also subject to image retention and burn like plasmas - so it's a trade-off. And as you say... the cost!

Going OLED would mean waiting another year, which isn't out of the question except - I WANT NEW TOY NOW!

I bought one on Thursday.

It looks good, but then again I came from a 720p Samsung panel that I had for 8.5 years.

I'm no home theater guru or anything like that.

My initial comments

Great having android on a TV. Menu is quick and snappy, no issues experienced.

Netflix 4k looks awesome

Youtube 4k looks awesome

Sky feed is rubbish and i've taken it down to 720p, from the 1080i feed.

There is a thread over at AVSforums with the official discussion on the TV.

If your Auckland based your more than welcome to pop round and have a look.

The little things make the biggest difference.

Forgot to mention, the other reason looking at Sony was the center pedestal. Current TV cabinet is not as wide as a 55" TV, so TVs with feet on each end would require purchasing a new cabinet.

Thanks for that, Christchurch unfortunately otherwise I'd be around in a snap.

I don't suppose you have an Xbox or Playstation that you could comment on the input lag. Apparently it's a little high, but that might just be the US models and/or something only hardcore gamers would notice.

Hi Paul,

I'm in Christchurch, as we live in the shaky city have you thought about wall mounting if you own the house its a nice solution that really gives you room space back plus can't topple over if we get a shake. Try and twist the arm of the seller sometime you can squeeze out a better deal. Also JB-HiFi in Riccarton as a number of TV's on display and their guys seem to know what they are talking about, maybe they can demo you a Sony with a PlayStation attached so you can make a value judgement. FYI seems the Samsung is not too bad for gaming.

Wall mounting isn't really an option in the location it is going.

As far as the input lag goes, I can test it in store. I said I wanted to bring in a PS4 and test the CEC functionality anyway, as it can be pretty hit and miss with the PS4.

I think I need to do more reading, as in some forums they are saying that on their 55" ones the input lag is fine and that maybe it's just the 65" that is a bit slower. And it might not even effect the NZ models for all I know as they run different firmware I believe. Although, I think just testing it will be the only way to know if it's something I'd notice.
