eg, nascar, motogp, F1 are all receieved by sky in 16:9 some are HD avaliable, so why haven't they changed?

I believe there was a thread here last year saying that Sky promised to move into 16:9 for f1, but it hasn't happened.

I guess they think that most of the subscribers still have 4:3 TV's. I wonder if they could use the current technology to "ask" all of the sky boxes if they are set to output 16:9 or 4:3? At least they would then have some idea of widescreen uptake.

That would be no good.. I know plenty of people who have their decoders set up incorrectly to 4:3 on a WS TV because they don't like the bars on the left and the right and expect the screen to be full.

OK then maybe everytime someone calls customer service/tech line they should ask them. Won't take long to build up an idea of what people are using.

I think that SS1/2/3 are full-time 4:3 with the Rugby channel being full-time 16:9.

The rugby channel is full time 16:9 although with the older games there would be bars as the sides I would assume. I don't think anyone would subscribe to the rugby chanell if they broadcast games widescreen on SS1,2 etc. No one likes rugby that much do they?

This is not quite correct. The bulk of Sky's channels are still 4:3 and are not transmitted in 16:9 widescreen. By later on this year most of Sky's channels will be in true 16:9 widescreen with the exception of some such as CNN that are only broadcast in 4:3
