Well finally a (pitiful) discount on lifetime Plex Pass came up this morning (20% off) so I bought one.

I am trying to retire my WMC+OpenPHT client system, so I will be looking at getting the Plex DVR up and running.

Based on the below requirements what would people recommend I use as my Plex client?

1) Broadest codec support for direct play (server is incapable of keeping up with transcoding, plus I don't like it except on things like cell phones where it makes sense)

2) Capability for co-existence of apps from multiple regions (Nice to have but number 1 is Netflix)

3) Good interface aesthetics and reliability

Does such a beast exist?

Roku 3 (or the ultra)

Apple TV 4

Fire TV

These all come with remotest etc.  And probably range from $150 to $400.  As far as I know only the Apple TV 4 is locally sold (ie brick and mortar stores)

Or a chromecast, but then you're stuck with a device for the remote - this is also locally sold, and at $70 hard to beat on price.

EDIT: reading about the co-existence of apps, the Roku can't do this, it can only exist in one region at a time, personally I preferred the UK region as their FTA channels are much easier to deal with that the US.  Apple TV4 like an ipad can have multiple stores loaded and will have apps from mulitple regions.  The Fire TV I can't comment.

Apple TV 4. Sold and supported in NZ. Will happily let you install Apps from other regions, all on the one home screen.

Has Netflix, Plex, Lightbox, Neon, TV3 OD (TVNZ keep promising theirs...). I haven't bothered yet with any other regions, it does everything I want it to, and does it well.

Plex on the AppleTV4 works brilliantly - have been watching it a lot over the last few weeks. It's virtually replaced TV for me these days.

Fire TV does allow apps from multiple regions at the same time. Plus the new version supports 4k, something the apple TV doesn't.

I believe Amazon can be used as the server, so all files can be in the cloud.
