Question : choosing either Samsung, Sony or LG, which 55 to 65" Smart UHD TV would you recommend ... and why ?

I would go for a Samsung because of the Colour it out puts, but the main reason is it has 95% of all the streaming options ready to go, not like the others if that's what you are into.

Most of the Samsungs use an 8 bit screen, so they can't handle the 10bit colour that is now coming through. I went for the Sony 55" 8500 with HDR and a 10bit screen. It doesn't have the contrast of some of the Samsungs (and can't come close to comparing to LG's OLED) but I prefer the colour reproduction it does over the Samsungs (and 4K HDR looks sensational on it).
It came with Netflix installed. I was able to sideload Amazon Prime on to it though, apart from Amazon Prime having The Grand Tour, I can't see why anyone would go for it over Netflix. It streams 4K Youtube well and interfaces with my receiver, so all audio is routed through my receiver so I have 7 speaker surround (it evens changes the volume controls on the TV remote to instead control the volume of the receiver).
All in all I've been very happy with it.

What about TV NZ on demand apps ?
I'd stay away from Samsung smart tvs, dont like their proprietary system. I would either go for a dumb tv if possible, or an android based TV.
Samsung have a habit of dropping support for their smart tvs after a couple of years. My 2012 smart tvs are pretty much useless now, well except for all the annoying messages they pop up telling me how they dropping support for something (so annoying).
I went with a 4k sony android tv. Would rather a dumb tv, the specs of the android tv arent all that great and its a little slow where a $80 mi box is about 5 times as fast and does the same thing (well android wise).
I recently purchased an LG OLED (the 55" B6) and can confirm that the picture is... amazing. In terms of streaming options it supports the following:
- Netflix
- Amazon Video
- QuickFlix (*)
- Lightbox (*)
- Freeview Plus (TVNZ, TV3, Prime, etc.)
- DLNA (local streaming)
- PLEX
(*) == Not tested by me
The webOS interface + magic (air) remote make the smart features of the TV ridiculously easy to operate, which is a big plus in achieving WAF :)
Since setting up the PLEX interface for accessing my stored media, my HTPC is getting less and less use, which is a testament to how nice/easy to use the Smart TV is. If you can afford the OLED models, I highly recommend them. Not sure about picture quality of the LG LCD/LED units, but WebOS 3.0 is very nice, so worth a look for a more affordable option.
None. But the reasons really depend on your purpose for a TV.
If you want good picture quality the only TV worth buying is an LG OLED. Everything else on the market new is pretty rubbish in comparison (except for 2nd hand Panasonic VT Plasma's). If I was buying new and price was an issue I'd opt Panasonic as the picture quality on many of their models is great.
If connectivity and apps are your thing your choice of brand is going to be tied to what features you want.
Arguably the Sony is worth a look purely for its OS as it will be running an Anrdoid TV will it not? This by its own opens up a huge number of apps which can either be installed directly or sideloaded. Of course this completely ignores all picture quality arguments.

I like everything bout LG OLED 55" B6 ; it would be ideal ... except for the price.
Personally, I have a major problem paying $5K for a TV :)

I have last years Sony 55" x8500c. Android TV is awesome.
I'm an android fan and sold an LG to be rid of that POS.
I recently bought a 65" C6 LG OLED (it was cheaper than the B6) and haven't regretted it for a moment. Absolutely gorgeous picture. It's a joy to no longer have to pretend I can't see the light bleed from my 2014 edge-lit Samsung LCD.
The other TV I liked was the Panasonic DX900 with its full-array local dimming (ie: not edge lit!)
ps: yes, it was a lot of money, but I recently had strong evidence of my mortality, so I easily justified it. Still no regrets!

Golly. Double-posting is still possible in 2016!
