Someone told me today that TVNZ 6 & 7 are planned for Sky. Anyone know anything about this?

Very doubtful... Too many politics involved between Sky and Freeview.

Freeview will be using this as Point of difference to encourage people to move over
to the freeview platform.

was it Tuesday you heard this?  Undecided

it's a race as to whether Prime will be on DVB-T or TVNZ 6+7 will be on Freeview first

According to Freeview's Eric Kearley who was interviewed on Mediawatch the other day (download the mp3: http://podcast.radionz.co.nz/mwatch/mwatch-20080330-0905-Mediawatch_for_30_March-048.mp3 ) not very likely at all. It would be "slow suicide".

How? You would have to pay to watch TVNZ 6 & 7 on Sky as it would be part of the basic package - hardly competitive, IMO, especially with DVB-T coming out of new TV's.

Does Freeview get a % on FTA equipment sales?

No they don't.

Will these channels be coming to Cable at all? or is saturn limited by what sky has?

If a customer already has Sky for other reasons then there will be little incentive for them to try Freeview if they can pick up all the Freeview channels via Sky, because nobody wants an unnecessary kit double-up in their living room.

Similarly it will be a sunny day in hell before Prime is available on Freeview, because Sky has an interest in FTA customers' needs not being met by Freeview alone. As the battle hots up between Sky and Freeview it may even suit Sky's purposes to take Prime off analogue as well!

They won't be able to do that - one of the reasons Sky got the rights to the 2010 and 2012 Olympics was because of their FTA coverage.

IMHO I feel that Prime is no longer a FTA channel not being on Freeview. Because of that I object to them receiving NZOA funding which is for FTA channels, not Pay TV channels.

You miss my point here.. Freeview will do all they can to only have TVNZ6 and TVNZ7 on their platform.
If they allowed those channels on Sky then there would be no reason for people to move from Sky to Freeview.
Whilst Freeview make no money from Freeview (it's not subscription) its worth their while to keep the channels
'Freeview only' in the sense of attracting advertisers for all channels on Freeview (read 'more viewers = more advertising revenue).
