So while away on holiday, my house got broken into and a bunch of things stolen - including my Panasonic 46" Plasma TV and 300W LG sound bar (curiously they left the wireless sub woofer)

The insurance company has matched it with a 49" Panasonic Full HD LED but say that it's okay to pay extra to upgrade. I just don't even know if it's worth it to get a 49" UHD TV for $200 - $400 more. I do sit pretty close when I game so may notice the difference then, but still only have a regular PS4 that won't output 4k (some way down the track I will not doubt get a PS4 pro) Money is a little tight after christmas and a holiday, so I'd really only want to spend more if it's a situation I'd really be kicking myself over that I didn't take the opportunity to.

The only option is I could 'downgrade' the soundbar that is priced at $549 to something simpler (typically 80-100W) and put the difference towards a better TV.

What would you guys suggest?

I would go for it. You'll be kicking yourself in the arse later on.

Not much use right now. But, on balance, probably worth paying a small amount extra to get some future proofing. I would go with a 4K set.

I can get a 49" 4k for about $250 more... or a 50" with HDR for about $500 more. I guess if I wanted to be cost neutral I could always give up the sound bar and just work with the speakers on the TV.

TV speakers suck (Actually never heard mine on my latest TV but the last one did).

What TV's are you looking at? Personally, I'd go 4K for sure.

Things are still moving about in the word of HDR, and unless you were going high-end gear, it might not be worth it yet (lower models don't have the 10bit panels).  But then again, you game, so it *might* be worth it for that.

Matched Full HD 49" - $1179

49" UHD - $1498

50" UHD with HDR - $1873 (I've seen this one recommended a fair bit)

Any particular reason you want a Panasonic? Do you use the smart TV bits?

Just asking because Firefox OS has been discontinued AFAIK... Panasonic might support it for awhile, but without a community, who knows... *shrugs*

Well, I currently have a Panasonic so thats what Noel Leeming matched for the insurance replacement. And the TH-50DX740/750 has appeared in a few recommended TV lists I've seen. I have no real reason for a Panasonic (they just also happen to be what's on sale at NL at the moment too)

The smart TV thing isn't really that interesting to me, I do pretty much everything through my PS4 or smartphone & Chromecast.

They must have been keen to lug a 46" TV away.

Better be careful that they don't come back for your new one.

Indeed, before you get your new toys, contact a local alarm company for a quote. Should be able to get a domestic 3 sensor Bosch for about $1200 installed depending on access for wires. You can get wireless which works ok too

Everyone seems to moan about the lack of 4K content, but as we move to streaming instead of broadcast TV I expect this to pick up.

Youtube and Netflix (?) already offer 4K options, if the source content allows for it.

It's early on in the specs game though for 4K, so there's still some debate around how compatible anything purchased now will be in the future, but to be fair that games always going to have to be played anyway.

Anything hdmi 2.0 and above should do for basic use right now.  Option to others thoughts on this.

hdmi 2.1 specs have just been released, but they won't be in TVs for a while.

I sit about a metre away from our 55" in an attempt to recreate a 'cinema type experience' when watching HD movies. 4k is great, I don't notice the pixels at all, whereas with a full HD I would see these.

I had a 65" HD plasma - I used to sit about 2 metres away - but have had to push closer now because of the smaller screen.

For the marginal extra money, I would go for the 4k.
