I've just recently starting using the Plex app on Xbox One to replace by Raspberry Pi to play my h.264 MKVs.

For the most part I've been pretty happy except:

If a video has SRT subtiles (either in the MKV or as an external file), Plex will transcode the video stream in order to render the subtitles.

Is the any way to get Plex to overlay the subtitles without transcoding the entire video stream?

I've searched Google but have not found any answers, and I have had no response on the Plex forums to my query.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Thanks for that, not sure why I didn't find that in my searching (I promise I did look!).

Hopefully they will manage to implement it sooner rather than later.

Now I need to decide whether I should fully re-encode to burn in the subtitles, or live with transcoding for some of my files.

i have an xbox one but i dont use the plex client on it, if you consume alot of media via plex id look at getting a better client personally.

i use openpht personally, with Aeon Nox skin.

I was using Raspberry Pi with OSMC and the Aeon Nox Silvo skin, and I find the Xbox experience much nicer. Mainly because of how slow the Rapberry Pi is.

Haven't tried openpht, what hardware are you running it on?

i have a i5 htpc and a couple intel nucs running windows so im running it on that

you can also run openpht on for example, a odroid C2, faster than a Pi, still cheap.

I think I'll stick with Xbox for now, it's nice and simple. The majority of my files Direct Play, or at least Direct Stream video and transcode DTS audio (audio transcoding doesn't bother me). So it's a relatively small percentage that transcode the video as a result of having subtitles.

PMS is running on an i7-6700K with 16GB RAM, so it doesn't have any trouble with transcoding video - just a bit annoying because most things I have with subtitles are the likes of movies that have foreign language subtitles for only 5 mins out of the entire movie, but it needs to transcode the whole thing.

I hate the idea of losing picture quality by transcoding, but to be fair Plex seems to do a pretty good job of it.

And if the devs move the Xbox app to UWP, which would make sense, then that might tick all my boxes.

It wont be long, until they update it im sure to the UWP version, hopefully when atmos and pass through is properly supported, ive been using the app for years and its mostly fine, just a bit of a dog like you say when it comes to subtitles, and skipping backwards and forwards is the other pain.

simple logic.

There are options for specifying if subtitles are burned in or not, unsure how they relate to your particular client though (and what effect they have on transcoding)

I think those setting are found in some Plex clients, but looks like the current Xbox One app simply doesn't support soft subs. Hopefully they will update the Universal Windows Platform app they have for Windows 10 with an Xbox One version.
