Been following Tivo thread and decided this better here than there.

I have a WHS2011 server and a separate htpc with Windows 10 and added WMC. Problem is when major updates it kills WMC. Htpc has backup movies and tv series on 2 disks formatted NTFS.

Okay around 4 or 5 years back tried MythTV but never got my avermedia tv tuner to work. Now I have Hauppauge HVR 5500 tuner. Have been thinking again of trying MythTV on it but not sure with my movies etc on NTFS drives. I would also like to still access them from my laptop. Other option would be DVBlink at extra cost if that would be better.

This unit I use to record movies and TV Series from Freeview Satellite. (council keep saying they will chop trees down in reserve one day) and later when can get decent terrestrial signal will switch to recording freeview terrestrial. I then use this to also watch on TV

i5-6400T 16GB ram mini itx motherboard with intel i219V lan and 250GB M.2 OS drive

I could if necessary rebuild with spare board with Pentium G3258 and has 3 lan ports 1 is Atheros lan the other intel i217V

Sounds all good, but these days I'd prefer an EFTPOS payment, get home , plug it in, and sorted. Especially when WAF is in play

waf not a problem and have plenty of spare time to play around. Prefer build own as easy to keep up to date as technology changes and generally but not always doesnt go out of date as quick and have to throw away as store bought items. So time is not a problem

You could try nextpvr or media portal. They are both on windows and as long as theirs bda drivers you can load on your server it should go.

I've gone virtualised (windows 10) with nextpvr but my tuner is network based

Cool for you and the wife, but TV via a PC and Windows 10?? No thanks. I prefer lesser overhead, and it just works.

Mediaportal I tried 18months back or early last year maybe. However scraping movies and tv shows took almost 2 days and then were all over the place unlike with kodi and plex

So mythtv on its own or with kodi looks promising

If you want to try MythTV again, then you will need to find out if your HVR-5500 has proper Linux support. According to this page:

the HVR-5500 card is only supported in Linux for DVB-T, and with a patch, DVB-C. Pages like that can be out of date, so DVB-S2 support might be available, but if so it would only be fairly recently. So it would be best to try a very recent Linux kernel and if that does not work, try the latest V4L-DVB drivers on any recent kernel:

That's nothing to do with NextPVR. It's going to be a driver, codec or hardware related issue. Despite the fact decoding H.264 should now be simple, there are still issues out there.

I've used NextPVR (and GB-PVR before than) for 10+ years now. IMHO it's just simple and truly is a rock solid solution. If you want more advanced front end capabilities then you're better off using something like NextPVR as a backend for TV and Kodi as your frontend.

I started playing with this a few weeks ago then found out my card only had a single tuner!

WinTV is a pretty low feature app (was actually developed in part by the guy who wrote NextPVR). It's also not going to give you an EPG as it doesn't support the Huffman encoded EIT EPG used on Freeview.

yeah normally it is. But this it was same computer and drivers. Nextpvr pixilation. Then installed WMC and through that perfect. Close WMC down and open nextpvr and pixilation.

Shame you don't have the HVR-5525 as it appears to have full Linux support.

I've been running MythTV for 10+ years and its been interesting to see it develop and improve. I love it for FTA and I have a mix of DVB-S and DVB-T tuners in mine. Setup thanks to projects like Mythbuntu has become a lot easier, but debugging new tuners can be painful.

actually I do as well in the other computer. Also have a 4400 and the old Avermedia Trinity in the cupboard. I could swap the 5500 and 5525 over

Thank you for this information, I had assumed that since we could use series link it was a step up from most software. I will look at NextPVR, hopefully the remote supplied with the Hauppaue can work with this, as that is also a requirement for SWMBO.

Then I may have to build a silent box to replace my Tivo as it wouldn't need that much grunt and wouldn't need an SSD!

Looks like Mythtv is out as still doesn't appear to be able to insert commercial Blu ray disk and play. What thinking of doing is trying latest version NPVR and using registry hack to make media center button on remote load modern tiles. Have tiles of npvr, kodi etc there and delete all the tiles I wont use to have a nice tile screen uncluttered. That's what I like with WMC menu scroll up / down and select live tv or recorded etc from 1 menu

tried media portal 1 but tv series just wouldn't scrape right and was a mess so wiped it. Downloaded and installed Mediaportal 2 and TV setup well and TV Series scraped correctly so then did movies. Havent checked all but I'll Be Home for Christmas 1998 scraped as movie same name but 1997 even though correctly format and date in folder. Been spending last 2 hours and cant find how to rescrape that 1 to get correct. Been on google and wiki and found for first but not this. Giving up and will wipe it all and setup MythTV see how it goes even though lose Blu ray disk playback
