When I cable my PC directly to the TV via HDMI and using OnDemand, the picture is wide-screen with those large black 'bands' top and bottom, and slightly 'stretched out'.

I've tried presetting the TV with various options such as 4:9, auto-wide, 16:9 etc, but makes no difference.

Why is this, and can I make it fit the whole screen?

Change the display resolution on your PC to match the native resolution of your TV:  i.e. 1366x768 or 1920x1080.

Most likely happens because TV resolution is 4:3, i.e., being driven at resolution of 1024x768.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Yeah, makes sense now undecided

PC is currently at 1920 x 1080

TV max resolution appears to be 1360 x 768

I guess I need to try lowering PC resolution and see what happens.

You may also need to check the overscan feature of your graphics card
