Evening all,

I've connected my brand new Panasonic DMP-UB900 to my Epson TW8300 projector and when playing blu-rays can only manage an error - Source: HDMI1 Not Supported. I can get to the UB900's menu etc, had to set colour mode on the UB900 to YCbCr (4:2:2) to stop the signal flickering incidentally. Google-fu has worked there at least.

What else am I missing? The projector obviously isn't happy with the signal received from the UB900.

I'm currently by-passing my Onkyo receiver for video, so have HDMI cable plugged into the video only port on UB900, going to projector. Audio HDMI out is going via receiver.

You are having drop outs, ie the flickering

Epson TW8300 : Make sure you are using HDMI port 1

Is your cable longer than 5m?

Then this is the likely problem, then you might need a booster or a redmere chipped cable (monoprice) are relatively cheap.

Oh check with a 1~2m cable, even if you have to hold the UB900 up in the air.

Are you sure your projector is HDCP 2.2 compatible?

I'd take your player back to the store and ask try it on a 4k compatible TV and eliminate the player as the problem.

Was it by chance a demo or open box model?

The projector is HDCP 2.2 compatible - input is labelled as such.

Masterpiece is onto it, try another shorter cable to assess whether it's a cable issue or not.

What firmware version are you running on your Blu-ray player?

Then (as it's safer to transport) take the Panasonic to the place you bought it from to be double checked...

Last but not least, the projector would be worth checking of course.

Which reminds me of a Sony story.

A friend bought a Sony receiver on TM described as 'faulty', it wouldn't show anything on TV.

Reading the instructions it recommended Sony branded HDMI cables.

So, Sony HDMI cables were installed (same spec as the originals) and everything worked as normal.

So, this is a process of elimination - it's one of 3 things projector, cable or player.

Searching on line reveals some very unhappy 4K buyers with 2014 Tvs and lots of advice.

Is it playing DVD/Blu-Ray and Panasonic MENU OK?

Thanks all. Masterpiece is indeed onto it, it's the cable. Plugged the player into the projector with the short cable marked 18Gbps that came with the player and voila, we have picture.

The cable run would be at least 8m, more likely 9. I'll have a word to the a/v installer about it.

You mention a booster, would you recommend that over running a new cable, or HDMI over ethernet setup? Would this do the trick? https://www.rapalloav.co.nz/hdmi-repeater-4kx2k-ready.html

Hi this is a problem for anyone and everyone, my advice read the specs.

That booster, HDCP 1.4, so no it isn't compliant.

The cable supplied, the Panasonic one is 4k ready. The problem for most is not going to be the shorter cables, my tester rig I recently purchased is reporting that all my cables of shorter lengths appear to be fine, however that is not to say all short cables will work, there will be some that are only <10.2Gbps.

I have a selection of 0.5m to 10m cables, $15 to $300, all pass18Gbps. The 10m passes 5v only and fails on every signal, so is one kuput cable, it was once routed into a ceiling exposed to moisture so could of internally failed. Anyway, for most test first before replacing cables.

Those with longer lengths, especially routed links, you will face challenges. The main problem is if you don't first pass HDCP2.2 even low level signals will fail.

I believe, but can't verify, that the cliff for cables running on HDMI2.0(a) chipset devices is shorter than HDMI1.4 devices which had a few years of development and refining. This is from 1080p reaching 10m for the majority, now the limit is closer to 5m unless the cable is of the right build and design.

I have heard a number from the US specify Redmere chipped cables for long lengths, they are typically one directional. Monoprice have them for cost effective prices.

Again read the specs of any devices you intend to purchase, right now you will find devices with specific ports assigned HDCP2.2, HDMI2.0(a). Some don't say anything, in that case ask questions of the supplier.

The active monoprice items I have heard good things about from overseas(USA) by video engineer/designers, especially for longer runs. But I haven't used one myself.

Didn't you need only 8~10m? There is a Rapalloav 10m Redmere option, by the looks of the cable, note the source and sink indicates it is one directional so likely Redmere active chip inside, although it looks generic copy of Redmere brand. The advantage of local source is if it doesn't work as advertised it can go back.
