Hi all,

Keen to hear opinions on what Smart TV platform has the best support/performance here in NZ. From my reading it looks like Samsung has the widest range of apps, but I like the idea of the Android TV platform in the Sony. I don't know too much about the LG or Panasonic platforms. Is Android TV on Sony the only one that supports Chromecast?

My use case, is that I'd like to not need any other streamers or dongles - I'd like to just use the Smart TV platform that comes with the TV.

Parent's in law got a 32" for the bach, came with Netflix and Lightbox pre-installed. If you don't need Amazon Prime/Apple iTunes then it's ok...

I have a 2 year old Sony and it still gets updates.

I had an LG for 2 years before that. Updates stopped after a year, as well as some apps. Apparently they're better now, but I'll never buy another one.

The issue with Smart TVs is that once the updates stop, you can't use the apps... A problem in general if you want your TV to last more than 3 years! Even the android based ones will stop recieving updates at some point like the phones do and you'll be forced to a set top box or similar. In reality, a dumb TV with a smart hub is far more effective and easier to manage, especially if the TV has implemented HDMI-CEC correctly so the box can control the TV functions.
