Got an email from Spotify saying they're discontinuing support for Squeezebox products "soon" (no specific timeframe given; email copied below). My favourite bit is that apparently this is being done as part of making things "better and easier"!

This is real frustration for us, given a high proportion of our music is via Spotify and most of it is listened to via our three Squeezebox products. And this follows the imminent closure of Pandora in NZ, which is our other main source of music on the Squeezebox.

Does anyone know if we'll still be able to use Spotify on the Squeezeboxes using the Triode plugin?

I'd got so used to the excellent Spotify app  (compared to the Triode), which allows access to all users' accounts, Spotify-curated playlists etc.; if we can't get this functionality back we may have to look at moving on from the Squeezeboxes...

Important information about your Squeezebox speaker

Hello, We want to give you a heads up that Spotify support will soon be removed from your Squeezebox speaker.
We want to make playing Spotify on your speaker and other devices better and easier which means regrettably that we sometimes have to discontinue device-specific integrations.
To keep your music playing on your Squeezebox speaker we recommend a wireless music streamer, giving you the ability to play to your speakers using Spotify on your phone, tablet or laptop.
Click below for a list of other music streamers that support Spotify and keep the music playing on your speakers.

Thanks and keep rocking,

Spotify

I'll actually give this a shot however I think I may retire my Squeezebox Radio with the Google Home once I get it anyway. I currently use Google Play Music so have an addon on the server to make that work with the Squeezebox.

From memory the squeezeboxes predated the spotify connect stuff and had an alternate method of working with them.

Perhaps there can be a software update to add spotify connect support? But they are really old hardware now so may not support the needed stuff for it.

We just got this message on our Squeezebox Touch this AM here in Amsterdam. Very disappointing - we had Spotify running on a SB Classic for years and when that finally stopped working I found a Touch online about 6 months ago. The kids have had so much fun with it because of the screen and it keeps them off the iPad/phones. No we have to find another music-only solution with a touch screen so they can play their Spotify playlists?

P.S. Anyone know why they're doing this?

Just found out there's more on the Squeezebox forums. Plus there's a new unofficial plugin called Spotty. Just go to the Slimdevices forums and search for end of life in the main forum.

Yeah my Google Play Music hack no-longer works on my Squeezebox as I just found out - I don't have a premium Spotify account to test Spotify but the Squeezebox is still great at playing FLAC content and being an alarm clock. Pretty-much given up on it.

Spotty as @SamCritch suggested does appear to be pretty decent. Managed to get it installed but don't have a login (and can't be bothered creating one).

Thanks heaps for the heads-up on Spotty.

Found the time to install it today (LMS running on a RPi; if I got it working anyone can!), and it's working a treat. And this is looking for all intents and purposes like the official Spotify app, in that it allows full access to Spotify's own playlists, individual user accounts etc, not that minimalist approach of the original Triode plugin I had to use in the past.

It's brilliant in that this has saved our three Squeezeboxes from the chopping block; and with Getflix promising Pandora will continue to work post its NZ closedown, it's no longer the monthus musicus horibilius July had seemed like it was going to be.
