Just received:

Sony has confirmed its highly-anticipated BRAVIA OLED television (A1 series) has arrived in New Zealand and will be rolled out into stores from today.

Creating a totally new viewing experience by combining the superior picture quality of OLED with the 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme, the A1 series offers the world’s very first in-screen sound system in a large screen TV[1]. X1 Extreme has been widely acclaimed for its ability to produce lifelike picture with superb texture, depth, colour, and contrast, bringing a significant leap forward in the space of HDR.

OLED’s eight million self-illuminating pixels provide the A1 series with a significantly enriched visual experience offering unprecedented blacks, authentic colour, fast paced motion and a wide viewing angle. The X1 Extreme precisely controls the tremendous number of pixels and extends the capability of OLED to deliver an exquisite 4K HDR picture.

BRAVIA OLED’s innovations do not end with incredible picture performance. The A1 series is the world’s first large screen TV1 which can emit sound from the screen itself. Taking advantage of the OLED’s backlight-less structure, Sony developed a new Acoustic Surface technology which can emanate sound directly from the screen itself. This allows for a perfect unification of picture and sound unattainable by conventional TVs. It produces a wide sound and image synchronisation even off to the sides. Together with OLED’s exceptionally wide viewing angle, the A1 series offers unmatched visual and aural experience regardless of viewing position.

The Acoustic Surface technology lends to the cutting-edge design of the A1 series by doing away with conventional speakers usually located around the TV. The result is a unique stand-less form factor, with no distraction from the picture.

The new A1 series will additionally support Dolby Vision, the HDR format from Dolby Laboratories, which when paired with Sony’s unique technologies further enriches the visual experience.

This release follows Sony’s triumph in the Readers Digest Most Trusted Brand Awards 2017, which saw Sony recognised as the Most Trusted TV and Home Entertainment Brand. The results of the survey demonstrate a positive consumer sentiment towards Sony’s TV and home entertainment products, reinforcing Sony’s position as a trusted market leader in this category.

Price is a bit painful, for the privilege of being an early adopter. Guessing the price will come back within a year or so.

I saw one of these in Harrods in London 3 weeks ago. They are seriously unbelievable. The sound coming out of the screen defies belief. I had heard of them before I saw it, and saw an earlier protoype which was passable, but this thing was just magicool.

I will be purchasing an OLED in near future and was keen to stack the Sony up against Panasonic, but Sony won't get a look in at that pricing.

And the one thing that irks me about the Sony is that the screen slopes forward when using the pedestal, as opposed to standing perpendicular.  Reviews I have seen say you don't notice it when viewing, but, for that money, it should be upright (IMHO).

Sometimes one needs to be a bit more pragmatic about screen angles. I have jacked up the back feet on my LCD screen to reduce the reflection from the windows behind me. Reflections in daylight can be a curse.

I think Geekzone needs a review unit. I'm more than happy to review it. :)

I quite like the idea of the acoustic display but the TV I would buy an OLED to replace already has a 5.1 setup. For the same reason the Panasonic EZ1000U's integrated soundbar would be wasted. That is unless they can be integrated into the 5.1 system without the acoustic mismatch.
Because of the way the the driver/connection box is built into the rear leg of the stand of the Sony, I wonder how it will look when wall mounted (I know the box sits flat, but how will it look).
Now that more manufacturers are jumping on the OLED bandwagon I need to pay particular attention to HDMI and HDCP standards to make sure my next purchase doesn't get compromised by them. HDR10 and the likes of Dolby Vision, not so much, but still worth considering.

I like the tech, but similarly, I'd imagine anyone spending this much on a panel would be matching it to a sound system. Unless the theory is you spend so much on OLED that you can't get a sound system?

i'm looking at either the A1 or Panny 950.

As per comments above, I will be connecting to external speakers, so TV sound is unimportant.

From what I have read so far:

  • Sony is preferred over the Panny for motion control and upscaling, plus excels over Panny in HDR colour vibrancy.
  • Panny is preferred over Sony for colour accuracy.

However, for the above, the difference between each TV is so marginal, in normal viewing both are virtually the same.

Also, Sony has android TV and will be upgraded to Nougat. That said, apart from the in-build Chromecast, I don't really use android features in my current Sony.

The Sony definitely looks the classier unit, but I'm still not sure about the sloping pedestal. And Panny seems to have the price advantage over the Sony.
