Hi all,

Anyone else seeing pauses / dropped frames / skipping with DVB-S broadcasts?

I've got an HVR-3000 set up to record DVB-S broadcasts throught GBPVR. When I play them back I get sections where the video lags or stops for a short time. This lasts for around half a second, but sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. After the problem, it starts playing the video again, and I've just missed half a second of the action. The audio never drops out, it's always in tune and on time.

I've replayed captures several times and the problem always happens at the same places, which points to a capture problem rather than a playback problem. Task manager generally sits around 75% when playing back content (it's an old P4-based Celeron CPU and GeForce4 vid card, so that's to be expected). When the content lags/drops/skips, the CPU goes down to around 20%, which indicates the CPU doesn't have any frames to process. Half a second later the frames are back, and the CPU usge goes back up.

The system isn't generally busy when recording - it may be playing back an MP3 or whatever - and the disk isn't busy either by the looks of task manager. Hauppauge drivers etc are all up to date, from the 4.2 CD, so I'm really asking whether this is a capture problem, or whether it's a source problem - eg the signal from the satellite is just crummy, in which case I'd expect others to see the same thing.

Cheers

No skipping here, using a newer pc with mediaportal 'tho.
Oddly I built a rig which was complete overkill for a htpc, with an intel 8200 and nvidia 8800gt card. This rig stuttered. With my lower end machines I dont even need to bother changing the settings with mediaportal, it just works smoothly without fiddling with codecs/settings etc.
75% is quite high for dvb-s, it wouldn't take much to push the cpu to 100% briefly which might cause stuttering. I thought the minimum specs on the vid card was fx5200 and above.

Have you tried playing the video in something other than gbpvr/other machine to verifyu the dropped frames or a display problem?

It might be worth doing.

Also what mux are you using for recordings? Muxes cause lots of problems - the one with the "least" problems for skipping is normally the DVR-MS - but that does cause other issues...

Try a different mux, I had issues with the cyberlink mux on a previous build of machine and HAD to use the ati mux, now on this build i can use either and get similar results...

I have had massive problems with muxes, some times they seem to work well, sometimes not.  I run the same card as you and generally it runs ok

Latest Hauppauge CD for the HVR-3000 is CD4.4.  I don't know if it includes any improvement in the drivers.
Could problem possibly be caused by a signal dropout?  i.e. Freeview's problem not yours.
Or even a mis-alignment of your dish?

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.  I've tried playing back the content on another PC with the same issues, in the same places.

The MUX in use is DVR-MS, as that was what GBPVR used by default. I was thinking I should have a go with mediaportal anyway, so that's now moved up the list. I'll also grab the Hauppauge 4.4 CD and see whether the drivers are any newer.

4.4 CD seemed to help me

Try the Mainconcept or TS Mux to see if they perform any better

I get the occasional drop outs with my HVR-3000/GB-PVR setup too. It's generally been fine, but I recorded a bunch of stuff on Tuesday/Wednesday a couple of weeks back, and all of it failed after about 10 mins into each show. The MPEG recordings start off fine, then at about the 10 minute mark, the video drops but the audio keeps going. If I seek forwards in the file I still get no picture, and if I seek backwards to when the picture was okay, I don't get a picture either. You have to close and re-open the file to get a picture back. I tried running a couple of MPEG repair tools on the files, but they made no improvement. I'm not sure if it's just a dud frame, or something more severe, but it's damn annoying. I've tried playing back the files on two or three machines using GB-PVR, VLC and Windows Media Player, but they all behave similarly.

I'm using GB-PVR 1.2.9 with the Cyberlink mux, and a single HVR-3000 recording from DVB-S.
