hey guys, i have a polk auido psw404 10 inch 200w rms? sub, i want to add an extra sub for home theater but also to be used for a stereo set up i have.

i have a 300w rms 1 channel home amp spare and was considering using it to power a 12 inch car sub.

but i wonder how this would sound in a house, any suggestions?

The problem you will have is supplying a constant 12v source that doesn't suffer voltage sag when the amp has to produce the big booms.

In a car the amp is powered with heavy leads direct from the battery to overcome this issue.

The amp is a home theatre amp, 240v supply class j, 300w rms out at 4ohms half designed for subs, the amp is not my issue

Just need a crossover - sub out on a home theater amp will usually get you most of the way there but the crossovers on most seem to be pretty coarse with their steps so one setting will be almost doing nothing, next one up will be booming away with you able to understand the words from the sub on its own.

For your stereo setup, need to have a pre-out on the amplifier to take into a dedicated crossover, and then hopefully a return to the power amp in on it for the main channels from the high pass output, and then the low pass out into the subs amplifier.

How good a sub is it?

I ask as a $100 sub in a cheap box is probably not gonna sound that good in a HT set up - for in cars their main duty is to move a lot of air quickly - and many car subs do this well, but are sloppy in doing so - and hide this by the fact it's being done in a terrible environment - aka, a car.

Whereas I reckon in a HT set up you your 10 inch polk would sound a lot better/ tighter as its been designed for that purpose.

All that said, I would ignore all is just said (!!) - and try it - if you like it, sweet...if not it was a fun experiment.

I have a cheap crap dual 18 box with cheap crap 18's on a cheap crap amp from surplustronics for sub at home, and it sounds better than anything I have heard for not much money from the home theater brands. Except that it riles up the neighbours so its now being stored in the shed.
