Hi all,

I'm just wondering what experiences people have had using Kodi on an Apple TV 4?

I'm a newby to Kodi but have read instructions on how to sideload Kodi onto the ATV. (It seems some want to charge a subscription for this but I thought Kodi was free??)

What I'm basically trying to do is to record Freeview on my study PC using NextPVR and a Hauppauge DVBT tuner (HVR 3000), store the recorded programs on my NAS and then stream them over my LAN to my entertainment system in the lounge. I have AppleTV 4 and PS3 devices plus a Panasonic Freeview recorder in my lounge. The Panasonic has only two tuners and is a bit slow.

Ideally, I'd like to use the Apple TV to control the recordings on the StudyPC using an EPG and then use this to watch the recording as as well. So basically a replacement for the Panasonic.

I'm wondering  whether Kodi on the ATV might let me do this?

An alternative, I guess, would be to get a mi box and do it using Android TV. But that's another box.

Keen for some advice.

There is a nice plex client for ATV.

You would need to load plex server software on the recording pc.

https://www.plex.tv/features/live-tv-dvr/

If all you wanted was live tv and playback of recording I’d have pushed you at Plex with my nextpvr channel/recordings importer.

But with that there’s no control. But Plex is native on Apple TV. And their recording offering is not great, but getting better.

I thought @sub was working on bringing his iOS app to Apple TV. But may have run out of time.

Thanks guys. Yeah on doing a bit more research I've found that the Kodi implementation on Apple TV only lasts for a week unless you have an Apple Developers account which cost US$100 pa. Not worth it. I could buy a mi box cheaper.

I'm thinking of Plex too. Will have a play with that. I can run a Plex server either on my PC or on my ageing ReadyNAS Pro (I hope). The NAS may struggle with the transcoding.

I'd be tempted to buy a mi box but another problem I have is that my Yamaha home theatre receiver is a bit old now and only supports optical & coaxial audio inputs. So I use a separate HDMI switch to switch the video from one source to another. New devices don't support optical audio out anymore so I need to extract the audio from the HDMI signal which needs yet another box --arrrgh!

If you record in the correct codec for ATV, it wouldnt need to transcode ?

Plex doesn't seem to support my Hauppauge HDR-3000 PCIE DVBT tuner. Dang! Might have to buy an HDHomerun.

There is also dvblogic and their Apple TV app.
You do need to buy the tvserver software but they have a trial so you can try it out first.

For your tuner nextpvr will read it (your original idea). Then get Plex to read nextpvr.

Thanks guys. I'm evaluating these options now. Just trying to get NextPVR to record to my NAS network drive which is proving not to be straight forward.

In windows services, set the service that npvr recording service works under to a actual user/administrator and not local system - as it needs access top the network.

Thanks will try that. I tried using a utility called Sharehelper but only managed to make my NAS disappear from my network (although it is still accessible through mapped drive)! Need to fix that.

Hey guys. Thanks for your help so far.

Solved my NAS recording problem and now playing around with Plex. Paying for Plex seems a bit of an overkill when I can't access the TV control feature unless I buy a new tuner. What's the best way of connecting NextPVR on my PC to Plex on the AppleTV? So I can at least watch live TV and recordings. David I've seen your channel/recordings importer. Being a newby to both Plex and NextPVR, where can I find instructions on how to implement this? Or is there another way?

Will give DVBViewer a go as well. If this all works may just get an HDHomerun. My current Panasonic DVR is pretty klunky.

The scanner (in my sig) had a link to instructions. https://sites.google.com/a/andc.co.nz/externalportal/nextpvr-plex-library
