Hi all,

I've got a trusty Veon blu ray player I bought cheap that works very well region-free dvd and blurays, and I'd like to get another one for our other TV set but it doesn't seem they're making the model any more - Model VN2916BR-DVD. It was cheap but it's proven to be a real stable player - my collection is about half US and half NZ blu/dvds and I like being able to play them all on one player. Does anyone know if there's any other blu ray players out there that can handle all regions easily without firmware upgrades etc?

I actually have been keeping an eye out on TradeMe for the model I already have for sale as I know it works, but haven't had any luck yet.

There were a couple of Toshiba players (the BDX1200, as well as the BDX3200 from memory) that could easily be made region free. I have the BDX1200 and it gets occasional use and works well. I think the Lazer player @rb99 recommends also works the same way as the Veon (codes from the remote to change the region).

In reality, I rarely use my optical disc players now. I have ripped my disc collection to a media server, and if I get a new blu ray I generally just use MakeMKV to put it on my server. Then it's available in all rooms, with no pesky region issues, and I can file the disc away safely. Instead of another player, this is a solution I think is worth considering.

The Laser player mentioned earlier is also sold by PBTech. Might be at a slightly higher price. I have one and it does a basic Job acceptably. If you are thinking you want a ‘higher quality’ one, check out the RapalloAV website.
