I am planning to get a new TV this year but was wondering if I should go with OLED or a Premium LED.

Are premium LED's worth it? For instance I saw a Sony one with Triluminos for around 2.5K. This is closer to the cheapest OLED I can find at around 4K. But I also saw a 4K UHD LG for around 1.5K.

Is it too early for OLED's in terms of price?

Am I better off buying a premium LED then just upgrade 3-5 years later when OLED's hopefully come down in price? Or will even a standard 4K UHD be enough if it is just 55" in size?

Benchmark price for a 55" OLED is now $2999 - that's what LG bit at Xmas for the B7

OLED picture is far superior but you need to decide whether you'll care or notice depending on your viewing habits.

Honestly I am currently leaning on staying with LED as based on my watching habits and lighting conditions (living room is next to balcony with floor to ceiling glass doors) on where the TV will be placed, it seems LED is the way to go. Or does this mean that what I found online is incorrect that OLED is better suited for darker rooms?

OLED appears to be the optimal technology in well lit environments.   Having essentially infinite contrast is key in that situation.

Let's say I have a 3k budget. Would it be best to buy the cheapest OLED available or a premium LED one? Any recommendation for make and models?

If you can find an LG OLED for $3k, get it. The OLEDs are still premium TVs (feature wise).

Ironically the cheapest OLED isn't that different from the premium OLED models. The B7 and C7 share the same panel.

The 55" B7 seems to be unavailable now except for Noel Leeming who are selling the 65" B7 for about $6200 (was on special over the weekend for $4999) but I wouldn't pay any more than $4000 for the TV which is about what it's worth - every other retailer is selling the 65" C7 for $4999

You won't get an OLED for $3k at present. If $3k is your budget I'd haggle somebody down on the Sony X9000E - the 65" was going for just on $3k during the Boxing Day sales.

Just saw a 2nd hand old model curved OLED 55EC930T on TM for $1800.

There is also a OLED55B7T for $3499 damaged panel replaced by LG with 12 months warranty.

I wonder if there will be good deals this coming Easter holiday.

The curved sold for $2999 for about a year as they tried to clear stock.

As the 55B7T was only ever sold for $2999 (it was sold by Noel Leeming and Harvey Norman during their boxing day sales until they sold out and LG haven't released more stock in the country) I wouldn't pay $500 more for it!

A fully backlit Z9 Sony is brilliant when calibrated IF you have a brightly lit room, that thing is a light cannon!

Buuuut, it aint cheap and OLED's are great in most rooms.

I find that LED hurts my eyes, it gets very very sore in under an hour. I hope OLED will not do that to me eyes :)

Depends on habits. After 833 days (2,3 years) of 24h/7d viewing, the actual OLED's lifetime will have come to an end. But who is gonna watching 24h/7d? wink

For me a Samsung QLED Q8F 65" is good enough.

I wish I could go 65" but its too big for my living room. Bottom line, wife says NO :) So 55" or 58-60 if I get lucky :)
