Can't find the info anywhere: tossing up between the new 40" Sony W LCD and the Samsung 6 - does anyone know if these can pull off 1:1 pixel mapping with an HTPC?

(Incidentally, I'm SO resenting having to use Mediaportal for freeview at the moment. Sooooo sloooow and unpretty... I do miss my WMC... but here I am going off topic on my own post. Never mind)

I have the previous medel Samsung (LA40S81), it does 1:1 on VGA and HDMI (just scan)

The Sony my parents have (also previous model) does 1:1 on VGA, didnt check HDMI, but The VGA looks much better on the Samsung - I much prefer the Samsung to the Sony.

I was previously a big fan of the Sony screen, but have noticed the new Samsungs are much better overall. ( i deliver & install at least one of each per week)

I have an earlier model Samsung: 32" R8BH & it does 1:1 on both VGA & HDMI (only input 2, though). Where does the 6 series come in terms of model line? If it is towards the topend I would bank it is capable of 1:1 on all digital input types: but maybe not all input connections.

The new 6 series comes in at the top of the line... in terms of featureset, it's actually looking like it's topping the F series, which they've weirdly left in the market.

5's are the affordable ones, the 6's are fancy. Watching bluray on them in Harvey Norman on the weekend, I couldn't see the difference.

Have the 40" Sony W. Yes 1:1, you have to set an option in the XMB menu of the TV but once that is done all is ok. I do get messages about the lack of audio on the hdmi connection but they dissappear after 5 secs. Only get this because audio is going through soudn card to 7.1 speakers and not through TV to Receiver to speakers.

Freeview looks good, Guide is good, channel changing is very good with built in digital tuner.

Also blacks are black on the Sony once it is setup for TV/Computer.

Browned, Just a couple of questions about your new TV (Is it the kdl40w400?):

-What option(s) do you select to get 1:1 pixels?
-Are you talking about using VGA and/or HDMI as your source?
-Will it do 1:1 on different refresh rates, ie 24hz, 50hz, 60hz?
-Does that SPDIF socket output audio from freeview only, or does it pass thru hdmi audio (2ch or 5.1)?

Yes KDL40W4000

Press home -> Settings -> Screen Settings -> Display Area -> Full Pixel.
DVI -> HDMI with dvi to hdmi cable.
1:1 At 24, 50, 60 yes.
SPDIF. Have no tested it and more than likely will not test it as wife will not appreciate the extra remote.

Now where can I get a 46", dont think the W is available yet.
V looks good though unless someone can convince me that the W is better (don't care about x.v.color, 10 bit panels, wcg-ccfl)

I tried to get the 6 series Samsung to do 1:1. I could get it to work using 1080 @ 50hz but not 60hz, and only after turning sharpness to zero.

Samsung 7 series will be out next month with freeview built in, as far as im aware there aren't any other differences between the 6 and 7 series.

Think you will find the D model has superceded the V series & the W is just below it

but their alpha references are enough to confuse any sane person. What the actual differences are: talk to someone at a Sony shop might be the best bet, that, or download the different models' manuals.

Current D series is old. The new V and W series end in 400. The V & W series are all 1080P whereas the D series is 1366x768, however the D series has motionflow instead. I have mixed feelings about motionflow, its really good but it can put annoying artifacts into the picture. If you want motionflow and 1080P go for the X series, but that is old, however the new X series will probably have FreeviewHD as well when it comes out later this year.

The only difference between the new V and W series is:

-W is a 10bit panel, V is 8bits. No biggy, even with PC use you can only output at 8 bits per pixel and other sources are usually of lower quality anyway.

-W has Sony's Wide Colour Gamut CCFL backlight. From testing the two models its no biggy either

-W has 'x.v color', only a handful of handycams support that feature and if you wanted better pic quality from a video camera you would buy a professional model which don't have x.v color anyway.

-W has a metal speaker grill and you have the option to make the Sony logo glow, YAY! lol

I compared the manuals in Bond and Bond and couldn't find too much difference except to enable/disable the features mentioned above.
