we've got Chromecast and a Panasonic 42" LED TV about 6 yrs old

I've used our 2013 MacBook to watch youtube clips and other websites on the TV no problems - the sound comes through the TV speakers

A couple of months ago we bought a new Marantz receiver and set it all up with our wharfdale speakers - it works fine and even when we turn the Panasonic TV on it automatically turn the Marantz on which is great

but last weekend I was watching the All Blacks game live on the MacBook, then cast it to the TV on chromecast and it was great.... except there was no sound

Under sound preferences on the MacBook there was 'Marantz receiver' so I selected that but no sound came out of either the home theatre speakers or the TV speaker

I turned the Marantz off but still couldn't get any sound out of the TV... the only sound I could get was if I plugged headphones into the MacBook.

does anyone have any ideas how to get the sound working through either the Marantz receiver or the TV speakers?

The chromecast has taken over the Video and Audio Stream.
The Macbook is not controlling the video/audio when casting

So if you want sound through the amp you need to need to set the AMP output to TV and direct the TV output to the amp.

EDIT: See you can't get sound from the TV. Are you casting the via Chrome webbrowser and not an app?
If so try casting the Desktop rather than just the web page.

Also recommend TVNZ and other apps to cast from Phones if you can. Little bit nicer interface, and more portable  -but that may just be me :)

Thanks for the reply - I'm not sure what you mean by "you need to need to set the AMP output to TV and direct the TV output to the amp."

The amp is set to cable / DSS which is for our sky decoder and we run HDMI from Sky box to receiver and HDMI from receiver to HDMI1 on the Panasonic TV and I think from memory the chromecast is on HDMI4 on the TV, but even if I change the TV to HDMI4 I get no sound out of TV when casting

I'm using Google Chrome browser and just go to youtube.com or cricfree.tv (to watch sports) and cast it to the TV

That was a confusing part of my reply wasn't it - sorry :)
I meant you needed to have a connection between the TV and amp to get the sound out of the, and have the amp set to that TV input source to hear the sound that from the TV.
At other time you want to get the sky decoder sound played on the amp.

It sounds like you need a way for the amp to know to listen to the TV source when you want it to play that, and the sky decoder source when you want it to output that.

Ok so there are two problems?

You can't get sound from your TV to the Amp,

and

You can't get sound from the chromecast to the TV

Just focusing on the chromecast:

Since the chromecast takes over the video an audio streams any changes to the macbook are using just changing the volume of the chromecast output.
Check that the chromecast is not set to mute via the macbook and is playing at full volume.

If that is OK I'd look at the HDMI settings in the TV.
Are the volume setting strange for the chromecast HDMI unit, or something else wrong.

Can you get anything else to work from that HDMI port, what happens if you try another HDMI port.

Sorry the rest of my help is general.

Not sure on the specific TV settings.

Worst case advise is reset the chromecast but I thing you may have tried that.

Is the Chromecast plugged into the TV or the Marantz amp.
I have mine plugged into the amp, so the amp controls both sound and video.
I don't have a mac, I cast from a Samsung tablet

The chromecast is plugged into the TV into one of the HDMI slots

are you saying I can plug the chromecast into one of the HDMI ports on the back of the marantz receiver?

if so I was unaware of this, but might have to try it to see if it can work

we have sky and our blu ray player plugged into the marantz receiver and both work fine with good stereo sound

Yes I plug the Chromecast into one of the Hdmi ports on the Marantz and let that handle the sound. Why use crappy TV speakers when you have a home theater system available.

For the record, all sources should connect directly into the receiver.

It can decode all the soundtracks available and it should also sync the audio and video together at the same time.
