With next week's launch of TVOS12 the Apple TV will support Dolby Atmos and HDR10+ in addition to Dolby Vision.

At the moment we watch all our TV via the Apple TV. Mainly iPlayer, ITV, TVNZ, Netflix, Hulu and ESPN+ for rugby. We rent/buy movies from iTunes regularly.

iTunes movies will be upgraded to stream in these formats where possible and I understand Netflix, Hulu and other streaming channels are also streaming similar content as well.

My current TV is HD and I'm ready to upgrade. Wondering what recommendations there are for a television to take advantage of the above (I'll be upgrading my sound setup to support Atmos but this seems straightforward).

One thing I'm aware of is that download speeds are (I think) limited in some cases when using an unblocking service - and I'm not sure how this will impact on available HDR content - and don't want to spend a fortune on a TV if there's going to be very little content available!

I use an ATV4K with a 2018 Sony OLED which supports Dolby Vision and its fantastic. I use NZ Netflix which runs at full 4K but the DNS service I use can only do 1080 from the US. I also have Amazon video (US) which streams in HDR and of course iTunes movies which are HDR or Dolby Vision.

I'd say OLED if your budget can stretch (LG, Panasonic or Sony - all brilliant pictures).

The Samsung QLEDs are nice to look at too.

At a cheaper price point, check out the TCL TVs - they have QLED as well.

Offtopic - can you pay for ESPN+ with a NZ Credit Card?

I have a US paypal account. To set that up I had to find a six digit US postcode that contained the same sequence as my postcode (my postcode is 7925, I use 79250 which is Pittsburg - this is required for card verification purposes) and use an address that corresponded to that US post code. (I found a street in the postcode area and used a street number that didn't exist. Works perfectly with my Westpac Mastercard.

I use this method to pay for Hulu, ESPN+ and anything else I need!

I have an 2018 LG OLED. It is advertised as being capable of Atmos and I use it with the (Atmos) soundbar that came with it. However, I do still have my Onkyo receiver attached to use as an HDMI switcher. So I just tried changing the sound out to HDMI ARC and tested the output. It appeared to be receiving an Atmos signal from sources I have connected directly to the TV (not the receiver). I was able to test an Atmos 4K Bluray (Avengers 4) and also Lost in Space on NZ Netflix on the TV app.
So, in a roundabout way, I'm saying my LG TV is capable of passing through an Atmos signal from an attached device and decoding Atmos from its onboard apps via ARC. Note, I only have NZ streaming services, so can't comment on the VPN.
High end LG UHD LED TVs seem to have the same capability for Atmos.

I am looking forward to tvOS12 for similar reasons, but what I can't determine is if it's only the Apple TV 4K that's getting the Atmos capability or whether the ATV 4 is getting it as well. I'm hoping the 4 gets it as that is what is connected to my proper Atmos speaker setup in the home theatre (1080p projector).
