All in the title, really... how DO you set up telstra (or in fact, any STB) on a media center?  I'm running a Hauppage 500 tuner, but having just moved to wellington, I forgot that some valleys have ZERO aerial tv coverage... banging my head against the wall looking for options to get tv!

I use a pvr 150 - which is the single version of your pvr 500.  And run composite cable from STB to back of tuner card and the audio cables.

You don't specify what "media center" you're using - I use gbpvr, and am using a usb-uirt for channel changing.  As far as I know the Hauppauge Blaster cannot be used as Hauppauge hasn't added the codes for the ADB cable decoder.  And since it's not user configurable it s pita.

I think the MCE remote and blaster can be used, but I've not had experience with that.

EDIT: Sorry yes i see in your sig you do specify what Media center....

Cheers - I'm running Vista media center, and was using mediaportal for freeview on digital tuner, which is now dead in the water with no line of sight to anything but the ocean.

I've got a MCE remote and so on, so will fiddle with that.

Okay, so I plug the STB into the tuner.  Um.  Right.  Then it detects the channels, or what?

Crap, can't believe that there's not a guide out there... trying to figure out what I'll need to do before we get the stb installed on tuesday...

No it does detect the channels.  You will have to set up "something" in MCE that says, please take the composite feed from the pvr500 and call that Telstra.  Then within MCE you then need to add all the channels, ie, 11 for E! and 60 for MTV and tell MCE that if you want channel MTV, this is found on the telstra source and can you please change the channel of the telstra source to channel 60.

In gbpvr this is called a Channel source, the channel source is assigned to the stb (via the composite input of the pvr500 card).  Then after adding the channels to that channel source, gbpvr knows to call a blaster to change the channels on the stb.

Sounds to me like you have the Hauppauge Nova T 500, which is a digital only card. Or do you have a PVR500 and were you using something else for digital TV?

Whatever the case you need a analouge card, and setup along the lings of phycik's suggestion

Two cards... the nova 500 for dual tuner digital and the 500MCE dual tuner analogue... my main question is whether I'll be able to do the whole dual tuner thing - watch or record while recording another channel.  We can't get any tv coverage at all here other than by the telstra box.  Can you access two channels at once on the telstra digital TV box?  The non-fta channel's don't bother me much - they repeat stuff all the time, but having a media center accessing just one channel on FTA at a time is going to be a pain and may drive me to acquiring TV programmes in...other ways... which I really prefer not to do.

Not, sorry you cannot get access to two channels off the TelstraClear STB.

Do telstraclear use the same NDS cards as sky? if they do, you could try checking out the sky on HTPC thread.

And are you completely sure even a 91 element UHF antenna couldn't pick up anything?

91 element?  Well, it might, but the stupid body corp on the apartments isn't letting anyone put up aerials at the moment... *sigh*  Seeing if I can force THAT issue at a meeting today.

If you have two tuner cards (or say a PVR500?) you could theoretically record one channel out of the STB via composite video and the other using the tuner to access a channel from one of the  unencrypted channels on the cable. While I haven't tried that, it should theoretically work.

Really?  I have a pvr500.  Hm... I may have a fiddle and see what happens.  I take it I just use the standard tv-out aerial output from the STB into the PVR500 and have it scan for decrypted "aerial" channels, alongside the component input for the "cable tv" channels"?

*HEADDESK*

Okay.  Need help.

(1) Have verified that I can get a decrypted analog aerial connection out of the STB.  The TV can see it, and Vista Media center can see it as an aerial input, and tune to it as if it was a regular tv aerial.

(2) Have verified that I can get the cable TV connection, IR blaster, and so on working with Vista Media Center set up to see it as a set top box.

(3) Can't seem to tune both at once under vista. - i.e the 500MCE card seeing the cable channels on the STB while at the same time receiving the FTA decrypted analogue stream.  Is this the problem I've heard about with vista media center only recognising one "tuner space" at once?  Is there any way to do this without bringing back my happily dead mediaportal setup?
