I have a set of Sol Republic Earbuds (Shadow).

There is nothing wrong with them (I only listen to podcasts or some Netflix films/TV series) but I come into Auckland on the ferry (35 minutes) and then walk 5 minutes to work.

I find I have to really crank up the volume whilst in-transit.

So, I thought that noise cancelling Earbuds would be better, but I have no experience of using them.

Note: I don't want the Apple type 'AirPods' (for example), because I think I would/could easily lose one.

What are you using?

PS Yes, I can Google, but actual personal usage is better.

I know someone will ask what my budget is. As a rough guide $200 would be an upper limit.

I have a very deep and strong hatred of apple products.

But in saying that, I bought a pair of their Beats studio wireless headphones from harvey norman with noise cancelling for a bit of regular flying i did last year and they are pretty awesome.

I would love some noise cancelling earbuds but i cant seem to find any active ones for a sub $100 price- only passive ones which just use foam or insulation to block most of the noise. The active noise canceling requires some extra circuitry and a beefier battery to operate which i dont think can easily be put into ear buds.

I have some Bose QC30 ear buds. I use them for flying where they are good for engine and background noise, however they are not great for voices. I got them in Oz for $350 on sale.

In the end, I didn't follow my own thoughts on the subject.

I did a lot of research and finally purchased the Jabra Elite 65t from PB Tech i.e Truly wireless.

I was amazed at the high number of recommendations it received in world-wide reviews.

I have used them on the Ferry. They are not perfect, but I have nothing to compare them against and they are noise isolation, not noise cancelling.

So far, so good.

I am using the largest rubber tip, to try and keep as much of the motor of the ferry out.

My original concern that they would easily come out of the ear.

I would say they are rock solid, comfortable (for me 40 minutes one way) and the off/on or volume up/down button pressure does not press intrusively into the ear canal.

I would say, that my only concern is that because they seem relatively small, they are easy to drop if you are not taking care.

All in all, I think I made a good purchase.

I'm not sure if you'll get anything decent for such a low budget in NZ.

I played with the Sony WI-SP600N headphones at CES and really loved them but reviews have been pretty mixed. The price has crashed since they came out so you could get them off Amazon for well under your budget (which is about 1/2 what they sell for in NZ)
