8K now being broadcast in Japan.

NHK’s 8K (well it’s actually 7680 x 4320) broadcasts are now available on a daily basis on a special channel between the hours of 10 am and 10 pm. The picture quality of the broadcasts will be 16 x greater than that of HD, and audio will be delivered in 22.2 multi-channel.  NHK will be broadcasting in frame rates of 59.94, 60 and 120P.

To be able to watch 8K you not only need an 8K capable television but also a dedicated satellite dish to receive the transmissions. NHK also says that viewers may also need to replace receiving equipment such as boosters and distributor boxes. Currently in Japan to watch 4K material you only need a decoder box (these are around $800-$1000 USD). NHK’s 4K and 8K broadcasting is done with BS and 110 ° CS satellite broadcasting. At present, NHK has no concrete plans of 4K / 8K broadcasting by terrestrial digital broadcasting.

I think NHK was first to launch HD, way back in 1991. The rest of the world is so far behind...

I dunno how they can be doing 8k when 4K hasn’t fully rolled out. Al it will do is alienate those that bought 4K into thinking damn now we need another new set.

Ugh this pixelated 8k crap.  Let me know when 64k is being rolled out, then I'll be interested.

Even on my ageing 1680x1050 PC screen, that looks better than typical NZ broadcasts!

Maybe that's what Bill was talking about when he (allegedly) said "640k ought to be enough for anybody".

I just want all my channels in HD!

4K would be excellent,but I'm a realist.

Until they start to make content for larger viewing angles, the higher content resolution is just wasted since sitting barely over a meter off a 65" screen just has most content looking absurd. Great for gaming if you can adjust the FOV (except for the HUD placements) but when things (for broadcast TV at least) are still framed for a tiny screen that probably occupied less than 20 degrees of your vision then it just looks dumb in big high res situations.

I shudder to think what bandwidth this is using on the satellite - can't be cheap. Ultimately, satellite bandwidth costs is why Sky is reluctant to go HD on every channel.

Not surprising considering NHK's history. Also if you ever want to find out how something could be done better with technology, Japan is usually has some great examples of how things could be (although many wouldn't survive contact with western society, we're all too savage for nice things).
