Afternoon,
I purchased a pair of AKG K451 headphones around September last year from a buyer on eBay, new. As the seller would not send to NZ, I had my mother (who was living in Australia at the time) bring them over when she came for a planned holiday. I've had them in stored in the tough case I got them in since I got them.

This morning I used them and they worked fine. I went to use them again this afternoon and the right headphone doesn't work at all. I tried the spare cable, no change. Tried it in two different devices, no go.

Does AKG have any sort of international warranty? Note that I have hardly used them and stored them carefully since getting them.

I've sent AKG an e-mail already but would be interested to know what my options are for repair under warranty (if possible).

Then again, would I be quicker (and maybe cheaper) just to get a local electronics shop to look at it? Hopefully it's not expensive to fix - I really don't want to replace a $110 set of headphones after barely a year of using them.

@Quickymart yes - If I were you I'd attempt to dismantle most cellphone repair places might investigate them.

You can also try dismantling them yourself - A good dismantling video.

If it's as simple as a bad solder, this can be fixed in seconds with anyone with basic soldering skills.

I would have a go myself but I don't have a soldering iron and would rather just get someone to do it - I wonder if PB Tech would have a look at it?

Thank you for the suggestion, I appreciate it :)

Where in the country are you.

Try a hifi dealer to see who they know / get to service audio equipment.

There will be someone.

You could jump onto head-fi.org and try the owners thread or the AKG forum and see if anyone knows if it's a known issue and if there is a relatively straightforward fix.

I'm on the North Shore. I can look into a hi-fi dealer tomorrow, but I'll also give the AKG forum a try - I'd like to see if this is covered by any international warranty first (if possible).

$110 headphones?

The going rate to inspect items like that is $85 per hour (or if you're lucky, charged at 30 minute intervals).

The old AKG supplier in NZ walked away a while ago...

I don't know if HiFi stores will want anything to do with a pair of headphones you brought into NZ yourself...

So I'd get stuck into some DIY research, get your soldering on-point and give it a nudge.

Or...

Pop them back in their case and wait for your next e-cycling run.

It depends on how much you rate your time.

If true, that stinks. I've got some old Lenovo headphones that are 8 years old in worse condition that are still working! Never buying AKG ever again in that case.

Looking on eBay tonight, I found these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Level-On-Wired-On-Ear-Headphones-Black-EO-OG900BBESTA/153240336568?epid=1349298321&hash=item23add5f8b8:g:lJIAAOSwT-BbquAV:rk:4:pf:0

Genuine Samsung ones (one of the bugbears I had with the AKG one was the volume control didn't work on my Samsung running Android) - but these are actual Samsung headphones, so maybe they would do the trick. Anyone had an experience with these?

I heard back from AKG yesterday. They said I had a standard one years manufacturer warranty, and suggested I engage some third party to assess the headphones. Waste of time really, I won't be buying AKG ever again.

As an epilogue to this thread, I ended up buying a pair of these:

NZ supplier, so if it craps out I can go back to them directly. They seem to be pretty good so far (quite a lot of bass). Now I just need to find a sturdy carrying case...
