Apple has struck a deal with Samsung will they now strike deals with all other TV manufactures and how will it affect their AppleTV device? or is Apple going to scrap their separate TV "Hobbyist" device and include it in their Homepod?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Bloody better not. I avoid "smart" tvs for the express purpose of having seen how quick samsung drops services from their tvs. Independent devices, IMO, are the only way to do it. Much easier to replace a $100 - $300 device that the entire panel. Just needs a panel with enough HDMI ports, something my 2008 dumb samsung tv is more than adequate with 4 hdmi ports. I notice a lot of newer sets are 2 or one only.

Apple TV does more then movies, it has applic from non Apple party’s as well.

Apples movie service is flamin excellent for the now and then watching of movies, and they have UHD movies as well. Will open to more people if available on more devices.

With Apple TV you know the processor etc is fast enough, and get all updates so hope they keep it.

It's interesting to read the analysis of this move. Apple are launching their own global movie streaming service and need device support to make this work. To me it shows the Apple TV is nowhere near as popular as some might think it is.

Support for ‘smart’ TV’s has historically been lacking. . I don’t expect this to be any different. Start off with a flurry, then nothing. I will stick with my Apple TV, at least that has some element of future proofing.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I believe the support will be fine, for the year in which the TV is manufactured, after that, Samsung will be Samsung... doing as little as possible.

However it's about time Apple went and played with the 'big kids' like Amazon / Netflix. If they want to be deemed a content creator, then they need as many eyes as possible. Pricing will of course be key.

If it means less lawsuits over patents and more innovation I'm not unhappy.

I wonder if Apple is going to only allow it on Samsung Smart TVs that are powerful enough? I've owned two in the past, and right out of the box they're laggy as all hell and just feel like trash. I would think Apple wouldn't want to go near something like that.

As above, just a dumb display or signage TV with enough inputs is surely a better option. If the panel still works just upgrade the connected boxes as required rather than risk Samsung dropping support in 6months after launch.

It's a good idea and will only improve as the decade moves on. Having to swap between smart tv and apple tv is clunky, add in a 3rd remote like sky/telstraclear and its remote control hell.

But I would like to see LG and others adopt this - samsung is not the only game in town.

Interesting timing though ;-)

With more and more moving to streaming and away from aerial and pay tv that will be less and less of an issue.

Samsung already have a remote that is supposed to control 3rd party devices... it doesn't do a great job, but still.

Ultimately, 3 remotes isn't 'remote control hell'... when i had 7 devices, an AVR and a TV... that was. If I didn't have a Harmony Ultimate :-)

In all honesty, universal remotes would make a lot more people happy with their home cinema.

I think its more that Apple have seen the services side of their business as the new engine room of growth so are following the Microsoft path of "we don't care about the platform as long as you are using our services"

Thats why they have opened Apple Music to Alexa and I expect beyond TV's we may see a move to also support other streaming boxes like Roku etc.
