Hi.

I want to be able to play spotify through my amp but with the telly turned off.

My 1st gen Fire TV connects to the telly via HDMI and to the Yamaha amp via Toslink. It plays through the amp and external speakers fine when the TV is on, but when I turn off the TV the Spotify application is paused.

I've turned of CEC/Viera Link in the Fire TV and the telly, but turning off the telly continues to pause Spotify.

Is there anyway around this?

Alternatively, I was considering a chromecast audio, but that has been discontinued. A voice controlled device, like an echo dot (or the new Amazon Fire Cube/MiBox, time for an upgrade), that can feed a signal to the amp would be great, preferably if the speaker on the echo dot can be muted will the music is playing through the amp and external speakers. Is this a possibility?

We can turn the screen off on our TV when just playing music.

Maybe a solution if you can on yours?

Echo dot will mute when a 3.5mm plug is put into it, its analog only.

Really annoying because it means if the stereo is off then you cant get voice response. Its clearly a software mute of the internal speaker since there is lag when the plug goes in or out for the speaker starting up. This means bluetooth on the echo dot is more versatile since if there is no bluetooth connected it reverts to the internal speaker. But the bluetooth on it is trash quality codecs only with massive latency.

Perhaps try adding an HDMI audio extractor to the fire tv. My one nicely removes all HDCP and always shows as a 1080p 60 screen to the source even with nothing plugged into it. Its analog only and cheaply built crap but Im sure the better ones with optcial will do similar things. This is what I got, but looking now there are others with a coax out which might be good enough for you.

Found last night that our 3rd party YouTube app, called Player, will continue playing while the TV is off, but no such luck with the Spotify app. Spotify will play for about 5-10 seconds after pressing the off button the TV or immediately stop if we use the remote to turn the TV off.

I can do that, and have done that in the past.
