Hey my old Samsung PS50C6500TM died tonight so I am in need of getting a replacement.

It had been on the way out for a while (sometimes would turn on with audio only and a black screen, also had a couple of coloured vertical lines) so i had been looking at what was around.

What im looking for is 55" 4k HDR would like android TV

Short list is

TCL 55C6US

Panasonic TH-55FX600Z

Sony KD55X7500F

Any advice on those options? other suggestions? Probably leaning toward the TCL

Edit i see that Harvey Norman have the Sony KD55X8500F for $1500 (7500 for $1100). whats the difference between the 7500 and 8500?

I've got the TCL X2 US. I would strongly recommend against the TCL displays at this point - they just don't put the effort in the correct places, and it shows.

I'd also say avoid Android TV - you're better off with an external device.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

The Sony Android TV's are great if you like the idea of running kodi/plex etc on them, more use out of them for a poweruser. Samung Smart TV's tend to have more exclusive apps/services(ie when Spark launches an online sport service this year its exclusive on Samsung for some time before coming to other brands).

It would be between the Pana and the Sony, let the picture make up your mind.

I have the tcl 65 which I got for $1388. Everything works. But not perfectly.

picture needed colour correction now it's perfect.
Android is fine but not the most powerful processor, and has bugs, but it makes the tv almost a computer, much better than non android.

If you are a member of Consumer.org.nz they review the Panasonic and Sony you are looking at.

I also notice on the Panasonic website it says that the TH-55FX600Z is built for NZ conditions as it has both a satellite and UHF tuner on board cool

I have a 2013/14 Panasonic and the thing I find is that its software is soooo slow plus they have not updated it since the end of 2014.

Also I think geekzone would appreciate it if you take a look at its own pricing site cool

I had a Panasonic  DX605Z which dies last year, I was refunded since the costs of TV has increased and they couldn't replace it.

I spent some time looking and decided on getting the Panasonic  TH-55FX600Z the other brand panels didn't seem as smooth as Panasonic and also the smart functions of some TV's make them slower. Panasonic smart features don't get in the way of a functioning TV.

For me, I prefer a TV that turns on quickly and allows me to use my Nvidia shield tv just as quickly.

Simple remote functions.

If you want all in one, buy smart android TV with best picture quality.

I have TCL 55" 4k and perfect for my needs. Plex + Kodi + IPTV + YouTube + Netflix, works like a charm.

But I also have old samsung full hd tv + mi box 4k (android TV player), works perfect with all of the above apps.

If you want best picture for $ - buy none smart tv + mi box or any other android tv player (but buy android TV and not standard android).

The Sony KD-55X9000F is considered pretty good, and it seems pretty good to me. Expensive unless you get it on a sale though in which case might be 1700ish. Android seems reasonable, though not very elegant, and I still just use a Fire TV and a Shield TV. It gets better reviews that the 7500 and 8500 as it has better processor(s) and local dimming, better blacks with HDR apparently, generally faster. No idea about the Panasonic.

Might not count if you're in a rush considering some of the prices out there at the moment.

my sony 55" 4k tv 2018 model, is so slow.  its painful to use android tv on it.  so i would recommend against that.  my 65" sony is a lot faster, but still, can be a little laggy at times.

my fastest TV is a LG webOS 3 tv.  that is instant.  nice picture too.

I have a 75" TCL 4k, picture is nice, but android can be laggy, and the "instant on" isnt instant on, it has to boot every time you turn it on, so 15seconds ish wait.

Personally, I would ignore the smarts of a tv (just buy a nvidia shield tv and use that) and worry about best picture/quickest turn on etc.

Friends bought the model down from that recently and are very happy with it, no android though.

Sony X85F might be the go, or the model down as you've mentioned.
